UMB appoints new chairperson By Jeffrey Weeks Managing Editor Christina Ulosevich, a junior finance major, wasappointed Uni-versityMedia Board(UMB)chair-person yesterday in an afternoon meeting. Ulosevich served as a student representative to the group last year. Duringan interview conducted by the UMB at the meeting, Ulosevich said she wanted to serve as a "guide" for the board. "The chairperson needs to guide the individual media [while] being open to everyone." The vacancy wascreated when former chairperson Adrienne Weddington resigned last week due to personal reasons. Administrative advisor John Watson filled the position for one week, and presided over yesterday's meeting. Ulosevich and senior Rod Over-ton, a former editor of The Caro-linian, applied by yesterday's noon deadline. The decisionwas announced after a lengthy execu-tive session which was closed to the public. "It was a tough decision," said Watson. Ulosevich said that she would devote at least a couple ofhours a day to work for the UMB. "I plan to have enough avail-able office hours for [all the me-dial to come by," she said. The UMB oversees production of the various campus media, in-cluding The Carolinian ; the lit-erary magazine, "Coraddi;" the yearbook, "Pine Needles,*" and the video yearbook, "Kaleidoscope." It includes the heads ofthe me-dia, faculty and student repre-sentatives, the chairperson, and Watson. Ulosevich said that she sees some good things happening this year. "I see a lot of hard working staff, doing an incredible job. Creativity and innovations abound." She also said she would work closely with the student repre-sentatives on the board, because, "I know what they go through." Ulosevich said she plans to consider the vision of the UMB. "It's important to be thinking about what will occur in the fu-ture." The board plans to interview and appoint three student repre-sentatives in the coming weeks. See Faculty!p. 2 Second SLA meeting brings new appoinments to SG cabinet By Scott Henry Staff Writer Rob Posluszny was elected speaker protemporeandMichael Pearson was appointed parlia-mentarian Tuesday night at the second meeting of the Student Legislative Assembly (SLA). The SLA, the legislative branch of Student Government (SG), is still in a state of orientation for the upcoming year, and focused mainly on potential issues, fu-ture events, and the possibility of approving its own internal rules. Most of the business of the meeting dealt with student ap-pointments to SG and to faculty committees, la addition to Posluszny and Pearson, Karin Garner was ap-pointed legislative assistant by Vice-President Derrick Johnson. Mary Haug was appointed as an the possibility ofa $25 computer fee which could be applied to all students in the future. Melton reminded students of The legislative branch of SG is still in a state of orientation for the upcoming year. executive assistant to President Terald Melton. Melton wants the Student Escort Service, currently run for female and disabled students, openedfor male students. UNCASG is a state-wide or-ganisation ofAs student govern-ments from the 16 UNC schools. Melton also stressed the im-portance of SG participation in the Campus Planning (acuity committee. "The master plan for the uni-versity is coming undsr review this year," he said. Johnson announced that seats were still open on the assembly in all classes, and encouraged stu-dents to stop by room 270 in Elli-ott University Center to apply. TheSLApostponed discussion of its internal house rules until next week's meeting. Thepostponement means that the assembly istechnically work-ing without set parliamentary rules until they are |
