About the collection

The bulk of the Physical Education Pamphlet Collection was acquired by the UNCG University Libraries in 1958 as part of the Wellesley Collection, which was developed to support the curriculum of the Hygiene and Physical Education Department. Prior to its move to Wellesley College, this program originated as the Boston Normal School of Gymnastics in 1889, headed first by Baron Nils Posse and then Carl Oscar Collin. Materials in the P. E. Pamphlet Collection were first part of the library that supported the curriculum of the Boston Normal School of Gymnastics.

The materials focus on the following subjects : anthropometry, diet and nutrition, exercise therapy, deformities of the spine, barbell/dumb bell exercises, Indian club exercises, physical education and curriculum, and development of exercises specifically for children’s, men’s, and women’s health. They also document the development for the four major philosophical systems: German System (Turners), Swedish System, French (Delsarte) System, and American System.

This digital collection includes those items from the P.E. Pamphlets Collection that have been determined to be in the public domain as of 2011.
