An Honorary Degree Conferred Upon Mary *". Hobbs
At the Commencement exercises, June 15th, the University of
North Carolina conferred upon Mary Mendenhall Hobbs, widelv known
Friend ana member of the Executive Committee of the Five Years
Meeting, the honorary degree of Doctor of literatury. She was
presented for the degree with the following words:
adenhall Hobbs born at Jamestown, she laid broad
and deep the foundations of a liberal culture, first under the
tutelage of her father at the New Garden Boarding School, and
later on at the Howland school in New York. Deeoly imbued with
faith in the widening destiny of woman, for more than three decades she has stood forth in the sunlight, immeasurably courageous in the advocacy of complete and full orbed education, whether
under church or State, for youth and maid slike."""hether advancing the noble cause of higher education; widening the channels
of religious influence of the Society of Friends, both locally
and nationally; or vitalizing the consciousness;—it has been
with the spirit and the uen of the literary artist that she h^s
kindled the imagination and the emotions of her generation.
In recognition of this contribution to our mental and spiritual
life, the University of North Carolina will now confer upon her
the degree of Doctor of Literature."
