The Rich Young Ruler -Again-
I have read with more interest than sympathy various criticisms of the explanation made by Mr. John D. Rockefeller Jr. of the New Testament (incident) recorded in the Gospels -Mat 19-16 – Mark 10-17 – Luke 18-18 “The Rich Young Ruler and Jesus.”
Mr. Rockefeller’s statement was exactly what I have heard all my life given by persons who did not own hundreds where he owns millions. I fail to see where the real difference lies. If it were right for Mr. Rockefeller in obedience to this instruction of the (Master) to give his millions to the poor it was right also upon the same basis for all of us at once to begin a general distribution of our gardens and chattels and what bank accounts and R.R. stocks etc. etc. we may pursue. We do greatly ere, it seems to me, in setting a different standard for him than that which our conscious sets for ourselves. As to how the money was made I know nothing except what the Observer printed editorially 2-18-. But the fact that money is given so lavishly does show that at least the part with it does not cause such sorrow as the Young Ruler experienced at the
