Dearest Folks,
Just back from Manila. Went down yesterday for a little shopping and business at theatre headquarters. There we took pictures of some interesting native features' carts, buses with people and articles practically falling off, the bay with all the ships, etc. Want to get a couple of my workers in their native village tonight.
You know in the states most of the day laborers want to be paid by the week. Today my boys came to me asking to be paid every 15 days because they spent all the money to soon the other way. The Red Cross requires it done this way so I may keep it for them that extra week.
Some Nadzab boys came in today so we're going to cut the rug a little at the club tonight. They are boys who drew the caricature of me ' the four of them had lots of ingenuity.
Sunday night Tom and I going to a big benefit ball. Sounds like a very gala affair really. Can hardly wait to see the President and family, the natives and Spanish in all their regalia.
I was very relieved to hear that the pictures and packages has arrived home safely. Have some other things about ready to send so perhaps you'll get them in time for Christmas.
The food you write about sounds wonderful. I'll be only too glad to partake of some of it too. Our food is not bad now but not enough fresh foods, of course.
So Helen didn't go to Oakland after all. Do hope they find a place in which to live. They'll be so much happier together, I know.
Melissa said you were wondering about my being at a rest area and if I had suffered from the heat too much. That isn't it at all. We just went down to Los Banos that weekend because this Colonel had a house there and it was such a nice place. I am fine. It is terribly hot for a few days and then rains several days. Takes some of the pep out of you but so what' the cool weather will always bring it back.
Have gotten my clothes and again for airing. We have more trouble here than in New Guinea. Guess we hit the dry season there, however.
