Dearest Folks, Moving again but this time only 35 miles away. Both Betty and I are going since the ARC has closed our club. Special Services, the organization in the Army which is supposed to take care of recreation for the men, will take over. Believe their plan is to serve coffee morning and evening but evidently there is to be no planned program. Our detail did not want to stay on when we left and it has been possible to arrange for them to return to their outfit, since they were here on DS (detached service) and their organization will leave soon.
Betty only came home with moving orders Saturday afternoon. I was in the midst of more sewing for our room. Now we'll have another to fix up. Had to work all day Sunday which was brightened by a chicken dinner before work that evening.
Had to sandwich in the packing and washing the next two days because we only closed our club last night. At noon we had dinner with an ordnance outfit and after work stopped at the radio station for a fond farewell. What cooperation we have had from them it has really been the best on the base. Had the other outfits been so good our club would still be flourishing.
The colored club will continue to function, as there are a great no. of them on the base yet. Two girls came in while I was in the hospital so them are 4 of them operating a club here and one where we're going. The CO of the other base won't allow the girls to live there and the commuting is very hard, with roads as they are. When it rains very badly our river is impassable. Because the current is strong the river bed wide with no banks on either side it is impossible to build a bridge. It's the first fording I've done in a long time.
Later."" Went to the hospital to check on Kancor sores the dental clinic treats with zinc chloride and the MD's treat internally. For the last 4 days I've been taking sulfaquanadine (?sp) in case there are any organisms in my stomach which might be causing it. Also taking an iron tonic to see what effect that might have. Think they've exploded that theory, however, as there was no improvement in a month.
Betty and I are now somewhat settled in our new home real GI barracks this time, about which I'll write more later. Nice but much smaller in floor space and we did have our room so nice. Start again now and fill up your free hours.
Lately Betty had been getting on my nerves very much with constant chit-chat, determined ideas, and slight bossiness. We spent practically every waking hour together. That was one reason for my not enjoying my last year to the utmost so I welcome the change now. Although the first plan was for our staffing a Student Officer's Club it has been changed. I will still go into it but Betty will go to an Enlisted Men's Club of the same unit. Haven't seen any of the clubs so will be able to tell you more about them later 5 of them here with a commissary besides.
Will be having lots of interesting air stories to tell now since this is practically all air corps here.
My new APO is #713-1. It all comes in the same place anyway.
Heard from Helen, Melissa and Kay today so feel very rich. Lovingly, Jean
