Dearest Folks, Sitting at [Tom's] beside the fan trying to keep cool. It has been especially hot the last few days and seems even worse when we go to the club. Although it is all open we don't always get the breeze. Had such bad wind the other night that rood almost blew off.
Last night we had another big time at a birthday celebration we cooked up for Pat. Sent out shamrock invitations, one of which I'll enclose. We decorated our rec hall with greenery, flowers, shamrocks and a big cake with remaining birthday candles. Luckily I had saved the stubs from mine. That, by the way, would be a good little article to enclose in a package. Brought our club record players with amplifying systems from the club and on the most wonderful floor in New Guinea we had a swell times. Of course all this war made real feminine by the addition of dresses. I wore my plaid dress and felt, oh so good. I'm afraid it's not going to last too much longer though.
One of the girls was hurt in an accident the other evening but is not seriously injured.
Tuesday we went on a boat trip some place around the bay and plans for a moonlight cruise this evening which I'm afraid the colonel is going to disrupt. You see, the boat is his and we have to sneak in a ride occasionally. The coastline seemed to be much the same all along the way always with mountains in the background covered with that thick foliage.
It was to nice to hear from Daddy again. I thought I had written about the insurance but if not here goes. The policy didn't come until after leaving Washington and it wasn't possible to have the physical after that. So the thing to do then was skip it. I thought the Red Cross would send you a policy but perhaps they don't. Yes, they shouldn't have withheld income tax after Dec. 15 because they are to stop when we leave the states. If they think income taxes will be forgiven, OK, by me. I'd just as soon have the money. Will get my figures out and try to tell you whether or not the statement is correct.
We are afraid that one of our detail boys is going slightly psycho. He thinks that the MP's are following him and tells such fantastic tales all the time. He so seriously repeats and repeats stories that have about knocked you out already.
Have still been having kancor sore trouble. The dentist is treating them with phenol and in doing so found a cavity in one of my wisdom teeth. Had that filled the other morning by a Chinese dentist who is very gentle.
My nicest gift this week was a big mirror of the metal variety but anyway we'll have a full view of ourselves. Then I got lots of linen- will have to boil all the filling out and when that's done it will be nice, I believe. Maybe I'll be sewing again.
Bye, Bye for now
Lovingly, Jean " PS. Thank you for the thread, mother.
PS. Thanks for Sherrilyn's letter. There was a great deal of news in it for me- to say nothing of their expectations.
Atlantic really did do a job of feting for you and I know you enjoyed it all. Not such a bad place after all but you'll be much happier now.
The pearls sound very nice. I should see absolutely no reason why can't be sent to me. After all, it's a gift, not for resale.
Mother, your typing keeps improving all of the time. Wish I had a typewriter close at hand all the time. There is an old one at the club but there is no time for that when on duty and if you go specially for such some one always comes in and bothers you thinking, of course, that you are on duty.
I am tickled to hace the snaps of Jimmy and Janey together and Dang. He's just like Jimmy but I'm glad to hear with a happier disposition. I'm getting some prints of myself in uniform of the SW Pacific and will send them to you. Think I'll send you the negatives of my other pictures then you your own prints made. Printing paper is so scarce here, you know.
