Dear Mom," Here I am on C.Q. so will try to write you some news. By the way Mildred finally got home, and she is giving him a divorce so he can escape the punishment of the army's court martial system. She is foolish to leave him go scott free, but then she'll be better off.
Now the question of my coming home is a problem. If I come now I won't be able to come at Xmas. I want to see Francis but I wanted to be home a [sic] Xmas. What shall I do? Is he going over right away or do you suppose you can expect him for another leave. I wish I knew - anyway Mildred contacted the + [Red Cross] and perhaps I come home anyway and leave Xmas go- and come home later. Perhaps if Fran can't come home we can celebrate a fake Xmas dinner. I mean Turkey with oyster dressing?
Mom - I'm really happy with my new job, it is so different to have a little time now to read. After 2 yrs in the army I'm learning how to goldbrick and it is really pleasant. What size shoe does Pa wear - I hope to be able to chisel a pair for him. You know they are really good shoes and I've found out that the less you do and the more you get for nothing the better you are. When I finally get out of this army I'll be good ""for nothing"" - I've been promised a gi blanket, and I shall get everything I can from now on. I found out the hard way, that being a hard honest worker doesn't get any where - and by the great horn spoon, I'm enjoying myself. Life is certainly easier this way." I have sinus trouble and it is really driving me crazy - went on sick call and the dr. just gave me some nose drops and told me to steam my head. I sometimes think that I'll be good for nothing. Will close now.
