FACTS ABOUT THE DOWNTOWN RENEWAL STUDY
The Redevelopment Commission of Greensboro has received an $88, 521
grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with which
to perform a study of the problems in our downtown area. During the next nine
months much'will be accomplished in analyzing the needs of Greensboro's central business district. The area under study consists of 635 acres bounded
roughly on the north by Battleground-Fisher, the Southern Railway tracks on
the east, Lee and McCulloch Streets on the south, and the A& Y Railway tracks
on the west. In addition to the core of our central business district, many outlying residential and commercial areas are within these boundaries.
This undertaking is not a redevelopment project. Its purpose is to decide what our downtown problems are, their causes and cures. Out of this
study will come a recommended course of action for our city government and
private enterprise to take. This will be known as the General Neighborhood
Renewal Plan, or GNRP.
THE FAMILY SURVEY
As an important part of the General
Neighborhood Renewal Plan Study, every
family and individual in the study area
will be interviewed to gather statistical
data, determine housing conditions, and
to analyze environmental conditions. The
cooperation of these families in this survey is essential to the development of a
sound plan for improving our downtown.
This survey will begin in the second week
in March and is expected to be completed
during the latter part of April. The information gathered from the study will
provide the Redevelopment Commission
and Planning Department with much essential data on the area.
