YOUR DOWNTOWN
FOCUS ^n*
ON THE DARE COMMITTEES
DESIGN COMMITTEE
Every downtown must concern itself with its
physical facilities, not only in terms of
utility, but also in terms of beauty. A
happy marriage of practicality and attractiveness should be the goal for Greensboro's
downtown.
Toward this goal, the Design Committee was established as a functioning committee of DARE.
It is composed of representatives from the
Home Builders Association, the Construction
Specifications Institute, the Preservation
Society, the Greensboro Council of Garden
Clubs, and professionals in the fields of Architecture and Engineering.
Initially, this committee is concerning itself with small projects which can be easily
implemented; ultimately it will be concerned
with coordinating the activities of owners,
investors, architects, financing institutions,
and the city government to produce efficient
and meaningful downtown development.
The Design Committee, under the chairmanship
of Mr. Lawrence Mallard, presently is developing a design for the block between North Elm
and Greene north of Friendly. Many of the
owners have expressed a desire for technical
assistance in upgrading the appearance and
usefulness of their facilities, and a willingness to implement a plan of improvement.
This model block design is being developed
with the idea of having it serve as a standard of excellence for the design of other
downtown blocks.
Other projects of the Design Committee include plans for future seminars on downtown
renewal to be held for engineers, architects,
owners, and other interested people. The De
sign Committee has also discussed the possibility of an Architectural Review Board to be
established as a service to owners interested
in renewing their property.
As plans for downtown progress, the Design
Committee's activities will assume a rule of
increasing importance to the future of downtown Greensboro.
COMMERCIAL SURVEY COMPLETED
Mr. Harry Power and Mr. Bill Chambliss,of the
Planning Department introduce themselves to
Mr. Paul Bridges of Bridges Furniture, one of
the many downtown commercial buildings that
have been inspected as a part of the General
Neighborhood Renewal Plan.
The data obtained from this commercial survey
have been turned over to the data processing
center of the City of Greensboro for tabulation. Results will be available in a few
weeks, and will make possible a detailed analysis of the existing commercial structures
downtown.
thanks!
We wish to thank the Downtown Development
Association for the distribution of 1,000
copies of last month's Your Downtown.
