Iff31 dkersirV PFLAG Greensboro November meeting Tuesday, December 19 7:30 p.m. Friendship Friends Meeting House 1103 New Garden Road Greensboro, NC News and Commentary By Tom Clarke Last Sunday I was at die Triad Health Project's 15th annual Winter Walk for AIDS. More than 2,500 people participated and more than $109,000 was raised for THP and other local organizations providing support for people with HIV/AIDS. It's now been 25 years since the first cases of AIDS were recognized. Altitough advances in medicines have made il possible for those with HIV to live much longer now, the epidemic is not over - there arc still some 40,000 new cases of HIV infection every year in the U.S. It is importanl lo increase ADDS awareness and encourage safe-sex practices. I walked with the team from GSAFE (Gay Straight Advocates for Education), die local group working for safe schools - free from discrimination and harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. GSAFE supports Gay Straight Alliances al several Greensboro area high schools and provides training for teachers on LGBT issues. To learn more about GSAFE, come to the holiday celebration at Gary Palmer's house on December 18, from 7-9 p.m. * * * Gay activists were generally pleased with the results of the November elections. Although state constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage passed hi seven states, the votes were generally much closer than in die last round And for die first time, one state rejected the anti-gay amendment - that happened in Arizona, not a state known as a bastion of liberalism. Witii the democrats taking control of botii the House and Senate, we won't be spending our energy fighting against a federal anti-marriage amendment like we had to do tiiis year. Now we can press for pro-gay laws. Prospects for hate-crimes laws covering sexual orientation and gender identity appear brighter than ever - actually litis was passed in the Republican controlled House, but went nowhere in the Senate. Joseph Solmonese of the Human Rights Campaign says the prospect is great for passage of the Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA). This bill has languished hi Congress for 12 years. Less likely lo pass is repeal of the "DonT Ask Don't Tell" policy dial prevents openly gay and lesbian people from serving in the military. Of course, if any of these bills pass in Congress, there's slid die question of whether George Bush would veto tiicm or not. Time to Renew Annual dues The PFLAG Membership renewals are due. • D $20 Limited income (student) F1 $30 Individual membership n $50 Household D $100 Angel Old or new members please make your check payable to PFLAG Greensboro.
