September-October 1998 Greensboro: 855-8558 Winston-Salem: 748-0031 Alternative Resources of the Triad ARTbeatNews@juno.com Your source for the Triad gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender news and information. The Fate of the Community For the past two years, I have happily served on the board for ART primarily focusing my efforts towards events for fund raising. During this time, I have become familiar with various activities and programs for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community as well as making many new friends and acquaintances. This letter may come across to some as bitter and negative, but sadly it's true. I fear that the GLBT community of the Triad is in jeopardy of almost becoming non-existent. The reason is simply that the GLBT community will not support itself and seems very apathetic. Organizations such as ART, Power of One and Triad Advocacy Network have a difficult time having persons serving positions on the boards volunteering for numerous varied duties, and last but not least - donating financially. Unfortunately the most common if not only community support given is to the patronage of the bars. After all, my favorite excuse in fund raising is blamed on the money "Gee, I'd really like to attend the event but I can't afford a $30.00 ticket!" Yet that very same person will go out every weekend and spend twice that amount on a door cover charge and alcohol. I'm in no way putting down bars but there's more to life. If our organizations fold due to lack of support, think of the terrible impact this will have on everyone. No hotline/information line, no support groups, no advocacy programs, no communication, and no voice of the community. Since all things and events are some how linked, just think, even the bars could close. After all, the suppressing society would love nothing better than the shut down all "sick, homosexual, dens of sin" Jerry Falwell quoted, as there would be no communication or organization for the GLBT community to react. Aside from venting my obvious disgust, I truly hope that the community will open their eyes and try in some way to help maintain and strengthen our stand in the Triad. A proud and strong "community" will allow us all a higher quality of life. Volunteer your free time, donate financially, and be active - Anything, everything will help. It's up to you! by Bill Miller National Coming Out Day Turns 10 A Decade of Celebrating Openness and Honesty You don't need to be 'straight' to fight and die for your country. You just need to shoot straight. ~ Barry Goldwater When you allow your fears to dominate how you think, act, and feel, the result is an inability to move forward and to explore what is in your true nature. To put off living and loving in a way that's right for you because of fears - real or imagined - means you take away from whom you are and how you'll grow emotionally, physically, and spiritually. -Amy Dean "Proud to Be: Daily Meditations for Lesbians and Gay Men." It's no wonder we know how to dress; we've spent centuries in closets. - Isaac Mizrahi I don't think homosexuality is a choice. Society forces you to think it's a choice, but in fact, it's in one's nature. The choice is whether one expresses one's nature truthfully or spends the rest of one's life lying about it. -Mario Thomas No government has the right to tell its citizens when or whom to love.
