mnw Triad OCTOBER 1996 Network NEWSLETTER NO. 1 Mission: To be social and political advocates for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) Community. ABOUT T.A. N. The Triad Advocacy Network is a political advocacy organization in the Triad area established to pursue the following goals: (1) To educate the community at large, legislators, and the voting public about LGBT issues. (2) To encourage political awareness and solidarity within the LGBT community. (3) To be proactive as well as reactive in public relations. Five committees are actively working toward these goals: (1) Voter Education & Voter Registration, (2) Advocacy, (3) Media, (4) Research, and (5) Membership. Some of the activities T.A.N, members are actively involved in include: surveying candidates for local offices, advocating pro-gay positions on the issues, corresponding with elected officials, and monitoring local media and providing responses. The purpose of this newsletter is to provide background on current issues facing the GLBT community, so that we can make informed responses to media, elected officials, and others. TAN. meets bi-monthly. The next meeting will be November 25, at the Kernersville Public Library at 7 p.m. For further information, contact: JeffLawson-274-8759 Ann Buffington - 294-0171 Flora Isasi - 760-8865 Newsletter edited by Tom Clarke - 288-1329 HRC CAMPAIGN TO DEFEAT JESSE HELMS HRC's North Carolina Campaign *96 has reached the end of Phase One of our woik to defeat Jesse Helms on November 5th. We have contacted 130,000 voters across North Carolina to identify those who are ahead}7 planning to vote against Helms and those who are undecided about how they will vote on Election Day. While we are confident of succeeding in our efforts to motivate enough voters on Election Day to retire Senator Helms, we are also certain that the battle is not yet won. We will need to redouble our efforts in the remaining six weeks to ensure that we persuade the undecided voters identified in our campaign to go to the polls on November 5th and vote against Jesse Helms. To accomplish our goal, we have designed a persuasion campaign of educational materials that clearly shows how Senator Helms has failed to represent North Carolina on important issues that matter to our citizens. We need to again telephone these people and talk with them about making the right choice in the U. S. Senate race. WE NEED YOUR HELP! In the final three weeks we must staff our six phone banks across the state, and we need you to come out for a few more hours of diligent and vital work. In addition to the phonebanking, volunteers are needed for Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) and Election Day activities. In the Greensboro area, we are making phone calls from Replacements every night, Monday through Thursday from 6 to 9 pm. Call Rob Bilbro, 294-6367 (w) or 784-7370 (h), or Jeff Prince, 852-5948. HRC Get-Out-the-Vote Phone Bank Marathon. Sunday, November 3, Noon-9 p.m. Come to Replacements anytime between noon and 9 p.m. to help make phone calls to Gantt supporters to remind them how important this election is.
