Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays GREENSBORO, N.C. Vol. 10 No. 6 June, 2003 "Walk as one" celebrates diversity Chris Voohees and Linda Stroupe carried the PFLAG Greensboro banner in the "Walk as One" march this past Saturday in downtown Greensboro. The event was sponsored by NCCJ (National Conference for Community and Justice). We were welcomed by both Mayor Keith Holiday and WMFY Channel 2 anchor Sandra Hughes. Dr. Terry Grier, Sup't. of Guilford County Schools, also spoke and marched with us. It was chilly and drizzly, but the crowd was warm with enthusiasm for celebrating our differences and our progress in seeing our city become more inclusive. Two Greensboro Students Receive $1,000 Scholarships from GLSEN Greensboro GLSEN Greensboro awarded $1,000 scholarships to two graduating high school seniors Amanda Orndorff and Eugene Holmes at their first annual "Celebration" on May 12 at Temple Emanuel in Greensboro. This was their 3rd year to present scholarships to an out gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender graduating high school student in Guilford County. GLSEN Greensboro, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network usually awards only one scholarship. In addition to the scholarships, Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to Gay Straight Alliance Presidents Zachary Jinnette, of Northwest HS and to Lucy Danford of Grimsley HS. Also receiving Certificates of Appreciation were the advisors of the Gay Straight Alliances, Ms. Barbara Hands at Grimsley High School and Mr. Michael Harrison at Northwest High School. Rabbi Fred Guttman welcomed the audience to Temple Emanuel with a moving speech of support for the work of GLSEN. Greensboro's Mayor Pro-Tern, Yvonne Johnson, gave official greetings from the City of Greensboro and U.S. Congressman Brad Miller addressed the audience of 135 people. Two Guilford County School Board members attended the event with a third sending greetings. The "Celebration" is a new event for GLSEN Greensboro and highlights the artistic skills of local students who are involved in gay straight alliances or in advocacy work for GLSEN's goal of ending anti-gay bias in K-12 Greensboro PFLAG June meeting June 17, 7:30 p.m. Friendship Friends Meeting House 1103 NewGardenRoad — Welcome to PFLAG. We offer a safe, confidential space in which to explore our feelings and understandings about the gay experience, especially "coining out" and what this means to families and other loved ones. Listen and share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, knowing that others can understand. Welcome especially to our returning members whose love is so healing. schools. The evening is also used to educate the public about the work of GLSEN Greensboro and to make awards to individuals who are instrumental in promoting GLSEN's goals. Performances included Zach Jinnette of Northwest High School singing an opera selection; Isabel Caldwell from Southeast High School on flute accompanied by piano; Gene Holmes of Western Guilford High School with a dance selection; poetry by Amanda Orndorff of Northwest High School and by Michael Weekley of Eastern Guilford High School. There was a special guest performance by an octet from the Triad Pride Men's Chorus. New welcoming church formed This is the new church that Mac & Linda Stroupe have been telling us about - a church now being fpmned to be welcoming to all, regardless of sexual orientation/ A great thing is happening on Sunday nights at St. Paul Presbyterian in Greensboro! Epiphany Presbyterian New Crnrch Development is worshipping together in a safe, welcoming, celebrative setting.
