Vol.7 No. 2 FEBRUARY, 2000 Bad weather cancels January meeting; QCC rescheduled for Feb. 22 Due to the recent winter storms, the January meeting and the Quarterly Coordinating Committee Meeting were both canceled. (In the future, if you are in doubt about weather conditions, call Retta at 852-8489.) We hope the weather will improve and that we will see everyone at the February meeting. The deadline for renewing your membership lias also been extended, but this will be the last newsletter for those not renewing by the end of February. Dues are $25 for individuals. $30 for household; $15 for limited income or newsletter only. Everyone is invited to join in for dinner at the J & S Cafeteria near Guilford College, at about 5:45 p.m. preceeding the regular monthly meeting on February 15. New Videos for the PFLAG Library PFLAG has been given $300 for acquisitions for the library, and most of these funds are being used to purchase gay related videos. The following movies have been purchased or ordered, and most of them will be available to check out at our meeting February 15. Bird Cage: In this hilarious comedy, starring Robin Williams, a gay couple who own a "drag queen" club try to pretend to be a straight couple because the son of one of the couple is getting married to the daughter of very right winged parents. The Lost Language of Cranes: A college age London boy comes out to his parents, and the father discovers that he himself is gay. He struggles with his marriage. Rigid motion of a crane is a metaphor for the hypocrisy and perversions in the society. Serving in Silence: This is the true story of the lesbian Margarethe Cammermeyer. a decorated Army colonel, who dared to challenge the U.S. military anti-gay policy by fighting for her rights. Two Girls in Love: This comedy is about two teenage girls falling in love, one a rebellious tomboy and the other a beautiful well-to-do girl. Beautiful Thing: This is an old-fashioned love story about two gay men falling in love and triumphing against all odds. This film won honors in the Cannes Film Festival and lias Mama Cass and the Mamas and the Papas in the soundtrack. Maurice: In this 1987 British movie, an Edwardian Englishman falls in love with a fellow male student at Cambridge. His lover gets married, and the Englishman struggles over this all his life. Movie is based on a EM. Forester novel. We have more funds to purchase books and videos for the library, and we need suggestions. Please contact Robert Mers. 288-4921. with suggestions.
