N O T Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays PO Box 4153 GREENSBORO, NC 27404 PHONE (910) 852-8489 Vol.6 No.4, April 1999 GAY LOBBY DAY It was our privilege to be a part of a North Carolina first—the first gay lobby day in the history of the NC Legislature. Jonathan, Matthew, Gary and I arrived almost at the same moment to register and be oriented before beginning our lobbying. Senator Kay Hagan was in a committee meeting, but she later hurried into her office and listened politely to us. We were trying to show her how the CAN laws encourage any sort of discrimination. When I told her about an "out" high school student with whom no one would room on a band trip, it began to be real to her. "That's not right. That's not fair, " she said thoughtfully. Our Representatives "Mary and Maggie" were also in meetings, so we left info and hurried to the rally on the capital steps. It was a huge success; Equality N.C. PAC's M. K. delightedly estimated the crowd at above 250—darn good for a first statewide attempt. And the speakers were great! In the legislators' cafeteria, a man in front of me in line whispered, "There were quite a few of us in the lobby quiedy cheering with you. Thank you for being out for those of us who can't be." I knew then why I had come.
