MEDICAL SOCIETY SUPPORT IN DOUBT
CRIMES AGAINST NATURE LAW SURFACES IN REPUBLICAN STRATEGY
FIRST HEARINGS SCHEDULED
**************************************************************
The Medical Society will reconsider its position on AIDS.
The Society currently supports a universal anti-discrimination
law, money for AIDS education and prevention programs, patient
services, community systems of care, case management, etc.
A group of dissident doctors has made a formal proposal for a new
position that has to be considered at a meeting on April 9, 1989
of the Society's Executive Council. The new proposal includes:
1. Urge the federal government to assume the responsibility
for the health care of people "infected with AIDS".
2. Mandatory reporting of names of all HIV-positive people.
3. Mandatory HIV testing of:
a. Prisoners
b. Potential parolees
c. Convicted prostitutes/sex offenders
d. Applicants for marriage licenses
e. Health care workers
f. Cosmotologists (sic)
g. Food service workers
h. Healthcare workers (2nd listing unexplained)
i. Patients admitted to hospitals
j. Patients undergoing invasive procedures
k. Pregnant women
5. Authorize HIV testing without informed consent.
6. Prohibit discrimination against HIV-positive persons
except health care workers, dentists, cosmotologists (sic) and
food service workers.
The Medical Society seems to be Pulling back until this issue is
resolved. Until April 9, 1989 the Society is taking the position
that they provide medical and scientific information to
legislators and let them decide what the best public policy is.
We mav have to find our own doctors. If the Society does not
reject this proposal, or if the debate over it causes the Society
staff to take a neutral stand on legislation, we will need to
find physicians who can testify. Make a list now.
