The purpose of this appraisal is to estimate the FAIR MARKET VALUE of the listed property
Intended Use
The intended use of this appraisal is to provide an independent valuation opinion for the listed property that will be considered by the various parties involved in estate tax settlement purposes.
Subject Property
The property subject to this appraisal includes the items stipulated to the appraisers by the client which was examined by the appraiser on January 25-28; February 7-11; February 28; March 1-11; March 28-April 1; April 25, 28; May 3-6, 2005.
Valuation Date
The valuation date of the appraisal is the date of death as listed on the appraisal report.
Definition of Value
FAIR MARKET VALUE is defined as “the price at which the property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or sell and both having reasonable knowledge of relevant facts.” (IRS Code, Section 20.2031-1(b).)
Approach to Value
The approach to value used in this FAIR MARKET valuation was the sales comparison or market data approach. In this approach the appraisers compare data from the retail market and/or recorded public sales of properties comparable to those being appraised in order to estimate the values of the properties in question. In analyzing the data from such sales, a number of qualities are considered by the appraisers. These qualities include the comparison or contrast between the two properties in the following categories:

Biography
At the time of her death, Maud Gatewood was a highly recognized and award-winning painter in the Southeast, and, arguably, the most important and best known painter in North Carolina. At the age of 16, she began her studies at the Woman’s College in Greensboro, North Carolina, which is now part of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During the last two summers of her undergraduate years, she studied at the Burnsville School of Fine Arts located in the Blue Ridge Mountains close to Black Mountain College, which she frequently visited. During those two summers, John Cage and Merce Cunningham taught at Burnsville, and Franz Kline and Jack Tworkov were in residence at Black Mountain. In 1955 Ms. Gatewood completed her M.A. at Ohio State University, and in 1963 she received a Fulbright Grant to study in Austria, where she took classes with Austrian Expressionist painter, Oskar Kokoschka.
Ms Gatewood was an educator as well as artist. Over the years, she taught at Huntingdon College in Alabama, Texas Christian University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Averett College in Virginia, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition, she has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions and has received many awards and important commissions. In 1984, she received the North Carolina Governor’s Award in Fine Arts and, more recently, an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Recognition of her stature as one of North Carolina’s leading artists is further demonstrated by the 2004 release of a documentary of her life entitled Gatewood: Facing The White Canvas. Shortly after her death, moreover, the North Carolina Museum of Art, as well as the Museum of History, mounted small memorial exhibitions, while the Louise Wells Cameron Museum in Wilmington has organized a larger, more definitive retrospective of her work. Ms Gatewood, her art and influence, will continue to have an important place in the history of North Carolina.
Narrative
The artworks considered in this fair market appraisal are a group of 140 paintings, 10 sculptures, 246 prints, 3 photographs, 65 sketchbooks, 25 printing plates, and a very large collection of works on paper by the artist Maud Gatewood. This collection reflects every stage of the artist’s creative evolution, beginning with high school work in the late 1940s while the artist attended art courses at Averett College. It continues with work produced during her undergraduate and graduate education (1950-55), which is frequently abstract and characterized by the strong influence of Abstract Expressionism. Later, while teaching in Alabama and Texas in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the artist’s interests turned towards figuration, yet the brushstrokes are still very loose and the execution is still largely expressionist. During the mid to late 1960s, Ms. Gatewood’s work takes an even stronger turn towards stylized figuration, and her execution turns towards the hard-edge, as exemplified in her cut out paintings of late 1960s and early 1970s. In the mid 1970s, she abandons the cutout painting technique and returns to exclusively painting on canvas. It is the work from the late 1960s onward for which Maud Gatewood is best known.

appropriate, however, one must determine the possible effect on the price of the collection if it were offered for sale at one time. According to the IRS: “the concept of blockage is essentially one of timing. A discount may be allowed where a large quantity of any one type of art is offered on the market at one time and would substantially depress its value.” As mentioned above, this collection includes works spanning some 55 years. Although some of these pieces are typical of her mature style and thus more readily salable, other works are less significant, atypical, and thus less desirable to the average collector. Taking the number and quality of the artworks into consideration, it is clear that if they were all to be offered on the market at one time, the pieces would have to be discounted in order encourage sales. A blockage discount is therefore appropriate to the collection of Maud Gatewood. The blockage discount will vary by media as well as quality and quantity of work and be determined after a careful consideration of the artist’s reputation and influence, a review of the market for her work and recent sales, as well as consultations with knowledgeable dealers and collectors.
Although Ms. Gatewood’s work does sometimes appear at local auctions, the prices obtained have remained unrecorded. The only published records available are those of three sales at Brunk Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina. On February 26, 2005 a print entitled Day at the Circus from 1983 sold for $172.00. On June 11, 2005 a 22” x 21” painting dating from 1969 and entitled Fern Forest sold for $225.00. On the same day, a work on paper measuring 7” x 7” and entitled Road in Landscape sold for $150.00. Generally, works by Ms. Gatewood which appear on the secondary market are sold privately or through one of her representing galleries. Because of the infrequency with which Ms. Gatewood’s works appear at public auction, and because of the strength of her gallery sales on the primary and secondary markets, the most common market considered in this fair market appraisal is retail or gallery sales. The fair market values placed on Ms. Gatewood’s art is based on the scale which she herself applied to her work for the retail market. This scale has remained the same for both her more mature as well as her early work.
Maud Gatewood enjoyed a very productive career. Over the years, she exhibited nationally with various galleries, but more recently she has been represented exclusively by Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill and Hodges & Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina. These two galleries have been effective in promoting and selling Ms. Gatewood’s work on the primary as well as secondary markets. From 1998 to 2004, they have mounted four solo exhibitions (1998, 2001, 2003, 2004) with very successful sales. Even during the two years when no solo exhibitions took place, these galleries continued to promote and sell Ms. Gatewood’s artwork. This short list demonstrates the strength of and growth in Ms. Gatewood’s market over the past 7 years, especially in 2004, as well as the greater appeal of her paintings over her drawings, prints, sculpture and photography.
Because of the variation of the artist’s markets as they apply to different media, the appraiser has divided Ms. Gatewood’s work into five groups: paintings, sculpture, prints, photographs and drawings. Each group will be discussed separately, since each group raises different issues pertinent to their values.

Paintings
The group of 140 paintings has been divided by the appraiser into four groups, A through D, from the least to the most desirable.
Group A (numbers 1-20) consists of works executed by the artist when she was an undergraduate and graduate student from 1950-1955. Although some of these works are competent, most have more historic significance. Furthermore, they are almost exclusively abstract paintings, and therefore less desirable then those typical of Ms. Gatewood’s figurative production.
Group B (numbers 21-51) consists of works dating from the late 1950s. They display a more mature sensitivity and are working towards figuration. They were executed while the artist was teaching in Alabama and Texas, during which time the artist’s works began appearing in juried shows as well as gallery exhibitions. Works from this period, although not typical of her mature style, are still desirable to collectors and, in recent years, have still sold through Somerhill Gallery and Hodges & Taylor Gallery. In addition, four other works (numbers 21, 22, 23, 24) have been included in this group, despite dating from the early 1950s. Since these pieces were submitted by the artist to the Fulbright Committee when she applied for Grants to study in Australia and Egypt, she must have considered them to be the most significant examples of her student work at that time. Finally, three works executed circa 1970 (numbers 48, 49, 50, 51) have also been included in Group B. These are stylistically more typical of the artist’s mature style, yet appear to be unfinished.
Group C (numbers 52-81) is made up of works dating from the early 1960s through 1993. These include many of her figurative, yet still expressionist-inspired works. Some pieces in this group include the so-called cutout paintings begun in 1966 as well as paintings on canvas – techniques which stylistically reflect her more mature style, but as far as subject matter is concerned, are considered less significant. Other works included here have incurred damage which might discourage interest.
Group D (numbers 82-140) is made up of paintings executed from the early 1960s through 2004, including the unfinished painting the artist was working on at her death. This group represents a further development in the artist’s style, which moved progressively towards figuration. It also demonstrates a stylistic move away from her earlier looser, expressionist brushstroke towards the hard-edge, stylized realism of her mature work. This group also contains paintings which one could describe as her “signature pieces.” Although these works were included in exhibitions and are well known to collectors, they were not offered for sale and instead hung prominently in the artist’s home. These pieces held important personal significance for the artist and would therefore be very desirable to any collector of her work. Finally, the painting Movement (1953) is placed in Group D, since it was the only student work included in the artist’s solo exhibition organized by the Weatherspoon Gallery at UNC-Greensboro, Maud Gatewood: Southern Exposures (1994-5).
The first group of paintings to be considered in the blockage discount is Group D. As described above, this group is made up of some of the artist’s most well known and thus most desirable to knowledgeable collectors. There are, however, 59 works of art in this group, and even though these works are highly desirable, their appearance for sale simultaneously would overload the market, especially at their full retail price. In 2004, the strongest year for her combined gallery sales, 39 paintings were sold by Somerhill Gallery and Hodges & Taylor Gallery. Since the combined gallery sales (39) represents two-thirds of the total represented in Group D (59), a small blockage discount of 10% is applied to this group. Because Group C is made up of works whose subject matter and/or style may be less characteristic of the artist’s work, as well as some works with conspicuous damage, a blockage discount of 25% has been applied. Because Group B is not characteristic of the artist’s signature realism, a blockage discount of 40% has been applied. Finally, because Group A, is made up exclusively of student SUSAN FORSTER

work having primarily historic interest, many of which have incurred significant wear and tear, a blockage discount of 75% has been applied.
Sculpture
Neither Ms. Gatewood’s dealers nor friends could confirm whether she ever sold any of her sculpture. The 10 pieces in the estate are likely student efforts as well as a few later pieces she created for herself or close friends. Numbers 141-3 are probably formative works. Neither her dealers nor friends recognized them. They were identified through a video Ms. Gatewood made of her personal property in which she acknowledged having executed them. The authorship of number 144 could not be definitively determined. It has been included in this appraisal; however, in the hopes that, one day, its authorship may be confirmed. Numbers 145-9 are more recent creations and were likely private experiments. According to her close friends, number 150 is an example of a type of carving which the artist made and gave to friends. Because these sculptures are so rare and remained in the artist’s private collection, they would be highly desirable to a knowledgeable collector, and thus no blockage discount is applied.
Prints
Ms. Gatewood appears to have stopped making prints using traditional methods (lithography, serigraphy, etchings, etc.) in about 1994. In 1999 she began experimenting with computer generated images, and clearly explained the technique on the back of each print. From statements included with each print from this period, it is clear that she did not consider them experiments rather than a significant part of her artistic production.
The prints in this collection have been divided into three groups: E, F,G. Group E is made up of examples of prints for which less than 10 impressions remain (numbers 151-185 and 196-198); Group F is made up of prints for which more than 10 impressions remain (numbers 186-189); and Group G is made up of the computer generated prints (numbers 190-195).
Because many of the prints in Group E have been off the market for a number of years and so few examples of them remain, no blockage discount has been applied. A blockage discount of 25% has been applied to prints in Group F since the lack of sales indicates decreased public interest. Because of the lesser desirability of prints in Group G, and the far larger number, a blockage discount of 50% has been applied to this group. Also, a large group of prints in the estate remain unsigned (number 199) and appear to be experimental or unsuccessful impressions which the artist did not discard. These works have historic interest, but no commercial value. In addition, a group of old printing plates have survived (number 200). These are primarily plates made early in the artist’s career, and are mostly damaged, giving them, again, historic interest, but no commercial value.
Photography
Over the years, Ms. Gatewood has created and marketed some photography, but she evidently did not think of it as a significant part of her artistic output. Three examples remain in the estate and no blockage discount has been applied.
Works On Paper
As evidenced by the number of works on paper in this collection (especially those executed in the late 1950s and early 1960s) drawing was always an important aspect of Ms. Gatewood’s production. Early on, however, the drawings are more finished and enhanced with color, suggesting that they were meant as autonomous pieces, an end to themselves. As the artist’s work evolved in the later 1960s and into the 1970s, and as evidenced by the many sketchbooks created during this period, drawing became a more preparatory medium. The artist sketched almost constantly, and frequently from life. But the later sketches are frequently in pencil or pen, and used to map out the subject of her next painting. Watercolors, pastels, and pentel drawings are techniques she still used after the mid 1960s, yet the subjects appear to be SUSAN FORSTER

of a more personal nature. If sales of her works since 1998 provide any indication, paintings on canvas sold most frequently.
The works on paper have thus been divided into four groups: H, I, J, K. Group H is made up of framed works on paper (numbers 204-236). These works include many pieces which hung prominently in the artist’s home, some personal pieces, some preparatory pieces, as well as works that have been framed for future sale. Because of the highly finished execution of these works, and their importance to the artist, they would be highly collectable and no blockage discount has been applied. Group I is made up of early drawings. These include works from her high school, college, and graduate years. They also include the vast number of works on paper dating from her years in Texas and study in Austria, as well as some highly unfinished or faded works from the 1980s and 1990s. Because of the vast number of pieces in this group, their atypical quality in Ms. Gatewood’s oeuvre, or conservation problems, a 50% blockage has been applied. Because drawings gathered in Group J are better and more finished drawings dating from the 1970s through 1990s, a blockage of 25% has been applied. Finally Group K is made up of the artist’s sketchbooks. These sketches consist of many drawings in various stages of finish and date throughout the artist’s development. Because together, they form a very interesting group which documents the extent of the artist’s career, no blockage discount has been applied.
