Dear Dave:
In cleaning' out some files from "way back" I ran across the attached
series of speeches that I made in Greensboro during the 1948 polio epidemic.
The facts leading up to, during, and the end result of the epidemic,
which terminated in the development of the Central Carolina Convalescent
Hospital, reveal the drama.
I don't know whether the public library, the newspaper library, or
some other interested party would want such a series of recorded events for
historical purposes for the Central Carolina Convalescant Hospital or not.
Maybe the pr.esent hospital management would like such a history. At any
rate, I am passing this on to you for making it available to anyone who
might be interested just for the record.
For additional information, one might want to incorporate the articles
published in the local newspapers during that period, along with these
speeches in order to keep it historically significant. The facts revealed
in these talks, which can be confirmed in the press of that period, represents, in my opinion, Greensboro's "finest hour", and it just seems to me
that somewhere along the line it should be recorded as such. I know this,
it was a tremendous experience for me.
I am sure you will recognize quite a number of the names involved,
and if you desire any additional information or material, I am sure Carl
Jeffries at the Greensboro Daily News and John Foster, a local friend and
business man could fill you in. In fact, Mr. Hill knows a lot about it,
and I am sure if he reads all these papers he would wonder who I was working
for during this period.
This series of speeches was made to civic clubs, on the radio, to church
groups, etc. The first one, "Report on Polio", was made to a joint mass meeting of the Piedmont Area county and city officials held in the Guilford County
Court House to acquaint the government authorities and influential citizens of
the situation, about which much had been rumored and a lot of incorrect information circulated.
