C, & Philadelphia, Pa., June, 1956 No. 4 Ross, Allen, Odum,Butt Participate In Annual SummerTrainingProgram On June 11, 1956, four young men from colleges in and around North Carolina joined Vick in Greensboro to participate in the annual summer training program George Allen John Butt ^jfflS^;, \, **3(s>lR«- ftf V 1 ■■: / I^Bm) HP"" Bob Odum Bowen Ross Wt WANT YOU BACK IN GOOD WORKING JRDER! These men, Bowen Ross, Jr., George Allen, Jr., Robert Odum, and John Butt, will receive training in the areas of production and engineering. Upon completion of the summer training program, they will return to their respective colleges to continue their schooling. John Bowen Ross, Jr.'s hometown is Lumberton, N. C, where he graduated from high school In June, 1956. During his high school career he was a member of the Beta Club, the Hl-Y Club serving as treasurer his junior and senior years, and was also first man on the school golf team. This fall "Bow" plans to enter Duke University to commence work on a Civil Engineering degree. Another native of Lumberton, N. C, is George Calvin Allen, oi. Gcoige is a graduate of Lumberton High School ana a rising sophmore at North Carolina State College, where he is working on his degree In Industrial Engineering. At State he is a member of the Air Force ROTC, the YMCA Council, and the golf team. Robert Tracy Odum was born In Selma, N. C, but now makes his home in Clinton, N. C. Aftt r graduation from Greenville High School in-Greenville, N. C, Bob attended East Carolina College for 1^4 years. The Navy claimed the next four years of his life, where he was a Sonarman. He was discharged in 1954 and In February, 1955, entered State College, where he Is now working on a degree in Electrical Engineering. His outside interests include sports and music. The fourth man in this quartet Is John Butt, a Greensboro boy. John graduated from Senior High in 1952. While there, he was a member of the National Honor Society, the^Qiill and Scroll, and on the staff of the yearbook. John then went onto Clemson College, where he graduated in June, 1956, with a B. S. in Chemical Engineering. At Clemson John was a member of the American Institute for Chemical Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi fraternities, and Associate Editor of the Slipstick magazine. John plans to enter Yale in September, 1956, to work on his Master's in Chemical Engineering. "Bow" Ross's and George Allen's summer work will include drafting and floor planning for the Milton Street and Wendover Avenue plants. Special drafting assignments for the Engineering Department will be given to Bob Odum. John-Butt will be devoting his time to special assignments at Wendover Avenue under, the supervision of Nick Holloway. Not listed on the Service Award Rolls are those pprsons who are overtime exempt and who receive an additional week of vacation after 10 years' service in lieu of the cash service award. Suggester Of The Year Title Goes To Tom Bird,Philadelphia Mechanic Three members of our Division—Greensboro and Philadelphia- qualified for the 1956 Suggester of the Year. Tom Bird of Philadelphia vis the winner in winner Mary Raber-^ "»lady V&V, and Ray Ruth-Mechanic I, also of Philadelphia, were the runners-up. In rt ignition of his achievement, P.. S. Fitch presented Tom with a $100 check In the cafeteria during the lunch period on Tuesday.. June 12. Tom. who has been with Vick 22 years, Is a production, mechanic in the Engineering Department. In the five yea'a that this award has been givei he is the urst service mechanic to receive it. Past winners have represented the V&V, Cough Drop, and Receiving-Shipping Departments. Wherever you are, there will always be equipment, techniques, and methods that can be improved. All you need lb a good Idea. Think It through and turn them In regularly. A. G. Greeson-of the Milton Street plant, Is the only two time winner. He was the first recipient of the $100 check In 1952 and repeated again in 1953. In 1954 Joe Reiley, Cook Room Foreman of the Philadelphia Cough Drop Department won the avard. a close contest. Last year's To be eligible for this award, you must have at least five suggestions accepted and put Into effect during the preceding twelve months. In addition to the number of Ideas required, the quality of each is taken into careful consideration by the Suggestion Committee and by the final judges, R. S. Pitch and G. C Eichhorn. R. S. As Personnel Assistant 111 m. ::ft| 1 i The newest member of the Personnel Department in Greensboro is James T. Cornwell, whose hometown Is Charlotte, N. C. Jim joined Vick as Personnel Assistant on June 6. In this capacity he will be performing various functions in the Personnel Department. Jim was born in Shelby, N. C, on May 21, 1928, and attended the local schools, graduating from Shelby High School In 1946. After graduation Jim joined the Marine Corps for one year and in 1947 commenced his college career at Presbyterian College In Clinton, S. C, on a football-track scholarship. In 1949 Jim transferred to the University of North Carolina, but his studies were Interrupted In October, 1950, when he was recalled to the Marines. The Marine Corps didn't keep Jim, though, for he applied for Naval Flight Training, which he completed In 1952. In May, 1955, (continued on page 4)
