NSS THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA GREENSBORO LOODLINE UNCG School of Nursing Alumni Association Newsletter Summer 1998 From Your President Excitement Marks Year for Alumni Association by Laura Scales '82 BSN '95 MSN School of Nursing Alumni Association President Greetings. My first year as your president was such a source of excitement for me. Even though I tried to appear calm, I know that my efforts were betrayed by my joy. The learning experience alone is one I hope many of you will seek in the years to come. So far, I have been a part of so many impressive and memorable activities with the Alumni Association. From my first spring meeting and brunch to the luncheon for the associate degree alumni, I have seen many windows open to the opportunities for all School of Nursing alumni. It is very touching. I suppose my greatest joy has been my relationship with Past President Kathy Shackelford Foster '84 BSN '92 MSN. Kathy was my mentor when she asked me to consider running for president-elect. During her last year as president, she continued to nurture and coach me to assume the role of president. In each of our sessions together, I listened and watched as she laid out a well- developed plan. She is as attentive to detail as I am, so we made a very compatible partnership. Through my successes and my trials, she has been there for me. She gets me back on track and gives me insight into issues that I am too inexperienced to see. For all she has done, I want to express my thanks to her. In fact, I owe each member of the Executive Board a tremendous thank you. Your support and guidance helps me each day to know that I made the right decision when I chose to attend UNCG's School of Nursing. The Association's 1997 annual meeting was held Apr. 12. Approximately fifteen members attended the business meeting which was followed by brunch in the Alumni House. We presented the 1997 Distinguished Alumni Award to Barbara Osguthorpe '83 BSN. Laura Hampton Coker '85 BSN '90 MSN, winner of the 1996 Distinguished Alumni Award, served as speaker. In keeping with tradition, Barbara returned in 1998 to serve as guest speaker at our Apr. 11 annual meeting and spring brunch, which was attended by twenty-seven alumni and faculty representatives. The wrap-up activity for 1997 was the 1997 Graduation Special Exercises held Saturday, May 10. During that event, each graduate received a one year free membership to the UNCG Alumni Association School of Nursing Constituency Group. Each year, your Alumni Association recognizes a BSN and MSN graduate. The winner of the 1997 BSN Excellence Award was Sarah Gebhardt. The winner of the 1997 MSN Excellence Award was Julie Wood Barney. On behalf of the Executive Board, I would like to thank you for your continued support. We continue to grow each year, thanks to your efforts with fellow alumni. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the UNCG Alumni Association School of Nursing Constituency, please take advantage of the membership form on page 5 of this special issue of Bloodline. Normally, this newsletter is mailed only to Alumni Association members; however, this summer we are pleased to send it to all Nursing alumni. If you would like to continue to receive it, then join our constituency group. If you are unsure of your membership status, call the Alumni Affairs Office at 336-334-5696.
