John Quincy Adams, in a recent let-ter, accepting the Democratic nomina-tion for Governor of Massachusetts makes the following pertinent com-ments upon the condition and claims of the Republican party. He says: The only real claim of the Republi-can party, of late, to public confidence, is by a parade of trophies. Without head, or system, or principles, it is held together only by the life ot decay —corruption. Its system of taxation is the most burdensome and the least democratic in the world; its currency is the robbery of tbe poor, while Ha vaunted redaction of the debt has only been accomplished by a cruel taxation, which doubles the burden by taking two dollars from the people for each dollar paid the public creditor. " This scheme of imposts is deliber-ately and craftily organized in tbe in-terests of associated capital alone, and is as certainly, if not as palpably, a violation of every principle of equal democratic government as was tbe cognate policy of tbe same party, by which :HI hundred millions of acres of the people's homestead lands have io been given away to railroad eortOra-tions. This cunningly devised sciesne will this year take five or six hundred millions of dollars from the people.and pay it over to the capitalists who own your mines and mills nnd furnaces nod salt works, to-alleviate their unprofita-ble labors, as certainly as if the tax was openly levied and the bounty avowedly paid. Under the same sys-tem our ocean shipping is broken up ami ont shipyards are closed, and the fti -si g 'u••'. rjfKew England uolong-er fetches the cost of the buildings upou it. And that its conspicuous merit in affording protection to the American workman from the pauper labor of Europe ma v be apparent to ■he me; ie.k'ca|aci y, almost the only arti lewhich: admits duty IVee, is an unlini ted snpprj, of cheap Chines?. imported in lots to suit capitalists." Chinese in San Franeisoo.—It ap-pears from the census, says the San Francisco Bulletin, that there are 11,- 817 Chinese in San Francisno.of whom 2,040 are females, mostly of the lowest class, 1,148 are under fifteen years of age, and 320 were born in California. They own but little property, the re-turns showing only 974,800 of real estate and •1,188,080 of personal prop-erty; altogether only •1.262.880. This wonld be less than 9110 for each individual, while the remainder of the city's valuation, •258,793,625, divided between tbe remainder of the popu lation, 138,544, wonld give an average of fl ,900 to each person, The houses tbe Chinese occupy are nearly all rented from our own people, and the small wealth they return is less evenly divided than among onr-sel ves.and yet their wants are so si m pie that they present fewer examples of pauperism. Probably tbe greater Iiart of the money they save goes to China, whither they ail expect to re-turn, and thus they seem to be poorer than they really are, NorthCarolina is •18,000,000 in debt Tennessee has been plunged in debt since the cloce of the war to an extent which not only suggests repudiation, but makes the suggestion one which may be entertained without dishon-esty. Bullock, in Georgia, has taken possession of the state railroads and squandered their revenues. The state treasurer says the governor has plnn-lered the state. The radical*, in Ala-hamahnd schemes for saddling on the Rtnteatfebt of ••bout *?4,000,090 for railroad enterprises. Fecundity of Rabbits.—As we have annually complaints of the destruction of trees and shrubs bv rabbits, farmers and gardeners will do well to watch them closely. Someidca of their rapid increase may lie formed from the fol-lowing extract from an Australian let ter pnblished in the London Field:— About three years ago a Mr. Kobinson turned out thirteen wild rabbits on his run. and now morn than £7.000 have been spent in trying to get rid of them. There are said to be over 50.000 of them in the district, and they are spreading all over the country. We are now about forming a company to kill and preserve them for exportation. Two thousand four hundred rabbits were killed in one day by a party of gentlemen with guns about three weeks since, and they were all destroyed, not one of them used, to compel the dealers to kill for themselves, and so help to destroy them. It is said that over 100,- 000 have been killed, and still they appear as numerous as ever; and ail these from thirteen rabbits in a little over three years! A Ptetmre •/ IWwp*.—The "Will o* the Wisp," an English paper, satirical and oonaerratiTS, baa this picture of Europe : Bnaia •orerta, Turkey fears; Austria pondere, Italia cheers. The Vicar of Doncaster found the accompanying lines written in pencil on the walls of the belfry of Doncas-ter parish church. Rhode Island has 166 population to the sqnare mile. Massachusetts has 157. New York, which stands third on the list, has only 84. Patience is exemplified in the man who left his wagon while bis horse balked, set on a rock and read the bi-ble till the animal was hungry enough to go home. An old criminal was once asked what was the first step that led him to ruin when he answered, "the first step was to cheat a printer out of two dol-lars subscription to his paper. When I did that the devil got such a hold on me I could never shake him off." A careless Chicagoan has been fin-ed 910 for throwing his wife on t nf the window, to the danger of persona pas-sing underneath. Endeavor, if possible.to keep a clear conscience, and two or three clean shirts. Rise with the lark, but avoid larks in the evening. Be above ground in all dwellings, and above board iu all your dealings. Love your neigh-bor as yourself, but don't have too many of them in the same house with you. A California paper, believing that success is a test of merit refuses to mention the name of a yonng man who failed in an attempt at suicide.— 'Those who get their name iu this pa-per must succeed,' says the writer. A crusty old bachelor says that wo-men's hearts are as brittle as glass, and a man who wishes to engrave his name on them must use diamonds, or he will not be successful. Don't give up trying to do right;— whatever your trials may be, look above for strength ; do your duty and leave the result with God. Six young men, boarders at a Chica-go boarding-house, collected several hundred bed-bugs, pinned them on a sheet of paper in divisions and regi-ments, and labeled tbe paper, •Opera-tions on the Rhine,' and left the seat of war to be studied by the landlady. A Philadelphia negro went to sleep with his head on the railroad track, and a hand car canie along and ran over him. He got np swearing that a nigger couldn't get any rest anywhere, without some white man wonld come along to bother him. One of the wheels was broken. An Arkansas editor gives a brother quill driver this first rate notice s "The volcanic, pimple-headed, blisterbrain-ed, owl-faced, spiked-nosed, weasel eped, web-footed, peg-legged, lilliau-tiau, foggy pettifogger of the Demo- • rat does not like our personal appear-ance. Until this foul mouthed, bra-zeu ilHi.iscr has been run through a sieve, a Alter, scoured, scrubbed. swabbed, sponged aud disinfected, un-til he is a fit object to enter decent so-ciety, we will forbear having anything to say about him." Says an ancient writer when " a man dies people say what property has he left T" bnt tbe angels say to him what g ood deeds hast thon asot before thee.
