Before he left the Denver conven-tion, after having been nominated for vice president. Mr. Kern was in-vited by Hon. A. L. Brooks to visit the Fifth district and make one or more speeches during the campaign and accepted the invitation on con-dition that he found it convenient to visit North Carolina. It is signifi-cant to note that two of the three speeches Mr. Kern will make in North Carolina will be delivered in the Fifth district. The resolution was offered by Mr A L. McLean, of Jefferson township, and was in the following language: "Be it resolved. That it is the sense of this convention that hereafter no Democrat shall be eligible to hold the same county orfice in Guilford county ■°r more than two successive terms." Mr. T. A. Lyon spoke in support of the resolution, and when he had con-cluded Mr. Samuel Browne moved that the. resolution be tabled. The motion prevailed by a good vote. New County Chairman Elected. Immediately after the convention adjourned, the county executive com-mittee met for the purpose of perfect-ing an organization, the meeting be-ing presided over by Chairman Brown. Mr. A. Wayland Cooke nominated for chairman Mr. E. A. Brown, the nomination being seconded by Squire C. II. Willson. of Brace; Mr. T. R. Diliard. of Center Grove; Mr. Rob-ert Hrorkett. of High Point, and Oth-ers. When he had been re-elected by a unanimous vote of the committee. Mr. Brown stated that, while he appre-ciated the honor conferred nnm him, personal reasons forced him to de-cline the position. When Mr. Brown had refused a unanimous request of the committee to consider his de-cliiu. iion. the following gentlemen were placed In nomination for chair-man : E. 1). Broadhurst. by G. S. Boren, of South Morehead: Charles A. Hlnes, by A. M. Scales, of Precinct No. 4; B. H. Collins, by S. L. Davis, of South High Point. .Mr. Collins stated that he could not accept the position if elected, and upon a ballot. Mr. Hlnes was elected chairman, receiv-ing 17 votes to 10 cast for Mr. Broad-hurst. The following were placed in nomi-nation for secretary of the committee: D. H. Collins. J. I. Scales. W. I. Un-derwood. C. C. McLean and E. D. Broadhurst. Messrs. Scales, McLean and I'nderwood a'nnounced that they were not candidates and could not ac-cept the position. When the vote was taken, Mr. Collins was re-elected, receiving 16 votes as against 11 votes cast for Mr. Broadhurst. speech will be delivered in the af-ternoon, as it is believed more peo-ple from the surrounding country could hear him at a convenient hour then than at night. CONFEDERATE VETERAN3 DAY Old Soldiers to be Made Welcome at Centennial and Fair. The board of managers of the cen-tennial and the directors of the Cen-tral Carolina Fair Association have designated Friday. October 16th, as Confederate veterans' day. This will be one of the biggest and most im-portant days of the centennial and fair, and it is hoped that every mem-ber of Guilford Camp of Confederate Veterans, as well as many veterans from other camps, will be present. All veterans who can attend are requested to notify Adjutant W. W. Wood, of this city, in order that he may procure arms and make other arrangements for the parade. All vet-erans participating in the parade will be furnished with free tickets of ad-mission to the fair. Gen. Evans, of Georgia, the com-mander in chief of the United Con-federate Veterans; Gen. J. S. Carr, commander of the North Carolina di-vision, and Gen. P. C. Carlton, of Statesville, have been invited and are exacted to be present and command the veterans. Arthur Little, a white man from the Jamestown section, was commit-ted to jail yesterday In default of bond for his appearance before Jus-tice Collins next Saturday to answer the charge of the theft of $2,100 from his sister-in-law. When the panic came on last fall, the Gardner wo-man became frightened and drew her savings from the hank, placing the entire amount in a bed tick at her father's home near Jamestown. The money was stolen in January, and while Little was suspected of the theft, it was not until a few days ago that sufficient evidence was secured to justify a warrant for his arrest. F. Jordan, who told the crowd that, he had been requested by District Attorney Holton and two lawyers from Washington to furnish evidence in a case that was to be brought by the government in an effort to put the American Tobacco Company out of business. Mr. Jor-dan furnished the evidence and was told it wns sufficient to accomplish the purpose desired, but nothing came of it. After ex-Governor Aycock's speech, the convention took a recess until 2 o'clock* Afternoon Session. When the convention reassembled Mr. Thomas J. Gold, of High Point, was, upon motion of Mr. Thomas S. Beall, made permanent chairman, the election being by a unanimous vote. D. H. Collins and the representatives of the Democratic press were unani-mously elected permanent secretaries. Sydney Pass in Jail Charged With Murder pf Arthur Brittain. Sydney Pass, colored., a youg ne-gro, is in jail on a charge of murder, his victim having been Arthur Brit-tain. colored, a fellow workman on a macadamized road force employed by Mr. W. R. Jenkins near Summerfield. The trouble occurred Saturday af-ternoon, after the men had quit work, and Pass contends that he acted In self defence. He claims that Brit-tain was advancing upon hiin with a heavy stick when he seized the weapon and struck his assailant across the head.
