The county convention will be call-ed to order in the Grand opera house, in this city. Saturday at 11 o'clock. Aside from confirming the nomina-tions made by the precinct primaries, the convention will nominate a candi-date for county treasurer, Mr. Weath- *nj having received a sufficient num-ber of votes to prevent either Mr. McNairy or Mr. .McKinney from re-ceiving the nomination in the prima-ries. Every loyal Guilford county Demo-crat Who may attend the convention will have a voice in the proceedings, and it is expected that the convention will be one of the largest held in this county in several years. A special attraction will be the presence of ex-Governor Aycock, who will make a speech of interest and inspiration to all Democrats. As a public speaker Mr. Aycock has no superior in North Carolina. He does not come to Guilford as a candidate for any office or in behalf of any candidate, but to make a Democratic speech to Democrats. A committee from the Chamber of Commerce asked that the county make an appropriation of $500 a year to aid in the work of the organiza-tion. The board deferred final ac-tion on the matter. Citizens of the community asked that the board arrange for better drainage facilities on Horsepen creek, in the vicinity of Guilford College. It was decided to have the district sur-veyed and an estimate made of the fcost of the necessary work, the sur-veyor to submit a report at the next meeting of the board. Committees from the Chamber of Commerce, the Greensboro Retail Mer-chants' Association and the Tobacco Board of Trade joined a number of citizens of the community in a re-quest that the public road leading from Summerfield to the Rockingham county line be macadamized. The board spent considerable time in hear-ing the matter, but took no action. A petition for a change of the pub-lic road leading from Climax to Ju-lian was granted. The board adopted a resolution ex-empting from the payment of poll tax all ministers of the gospel en-gaged in the active work of the min-try in Guilford county. The usual appropriation of $50 was made to the North Carolina Children's Home Society. Motley. the Democratic and Republican can-didates for Congress. So far he has received no reply to the communica-tion, but in Democratic circles it is not expected that the challenge will be accepted. War and Navy Departments to Aid in Centennial Celebration. The military feature of the centen-nial la expected to add greatly to the success of Greensboro's gala week in October. In addition to the cavalry and infantry to be supplied by the government, the Gate City Guards and several other companies of the National Guards will be here and par-ticipate in parades and sham battles. Mr. G. S. Bradshaw, president of the centennial board of managers, is in receipt of a letter stating that the secretary of war has issued orders commanding a troop of the Twefth cavalry and a company of the Seven-teenth infantry to report in Greens boro for the week. The company of infantry will be accompanied by the full regimental band. Through the efforts of Senator Overman, who, by the way, is mani-festing a deep interest in the centen-nial and doing everything in his pow-er to aid the management, the Navy department has granted a request for the loan of a big portr«i)le search-light. The searchlight will be a great attraction. Passed Away Suddenly at Home Thursday Afternoon. Mrs. 3. H. Smith, an aged and well known woman, died suddenly Thursday afternoon at her home iii the southern part of the county. She had not complained of being unwell and attended to her usual household duties to the hour of death. The re-mains were brought to Greensboro, the former home of the family, and the funeral held from the home of a daughter, Mrs. Keeling, on West Gaston street, Sunday afternoon at 3.30 o'clock. Rev. Maybe, but these same rag-tags and bob-tails, by which is meant the men of no influence or standing, will be on hand at the convention next Sat-urday and will remember what has been said. W. J. WEATHERLY. Might Do an Injustice. Editor Patriot—The communication in the Record of yesterday signed by Mr. W. J. Weatherly is calculated to do me a great injustice and to prej-udice the friends of Mr. A. Weatherly against me. Some one may have made the remark he referred to, but I do not know who did so and I was in no way responsible for same. Such remarks do not meet with my approval. J. W. McNAIRY.
