CITY ENJOINED FROM FAYING PAVING CONTRACTORS. ONE FRANCHISE AT A TIME. South Elm Street Property Owners Allege That Work Does Not Comply With Spec-ifications— City Officials Cbarg-ed Wlih Negligence in the Matter. The opposition of certain South Elm street property owners who have hith-erto objected to the methods imposed by the city In bringing about an im-provement iu Greensboro's leading thoroughfare found a vent in iu au un-expected quarter Thursday, when Messrs., B. H. Merrimou and C. D. Policy Adopter at Last Re?ular Meeting of County Board Reaffirmed Friday. The tiuiisual situation which pre-sented itself at the last regular meet-ing of the board of county commis-sioners, that of two separate and dis-tinct companies seeking franchises for au electric line from Greensboro to High Point, neither having previously given any Intimation of its plans or purposes to the board and both being oblivious of each other's existauce, was Kenhow, of this city, and Mrs. Weill, met by the board in a manner clearly a resident of New York but a property l'xeM Hie policy of that body, as owner here, secured a temporary In-;at preseut (instituted. Contrary to evident expectations the work of the contractors was not even equally positive that their client* stood ready to begin operations at once, in proof of which they ollered to make their forfeiture limit only fifteeu days. Before adjournment Friday the com-missioners passed a resolution request-ing Mr. Justice to make public the momentarily interruped by the serving names of the principals iu his com-of papers on the joint defendants. Iu one instance, where the street car track has suu.-: a few inches, the paving company has beeu notified that even though it holds that the track was not properly ballasted it must correct the trouble iu accordance with the contract before that portion of the work will be approved. The city officials al! say they court the full-est investigation of the matter, believ-ing that the facts as found upon care-ful Investigation will sustain them in every particular. Disinterested people H. Dawes and H. Bayard Hodge, of Philadelphia, and Mr. J. W. Perry, of Norfolk, and others. The receipts ou this market for the past week, while not as small as for the previous week, were railier light, due considerably to the fact that far-mers are busy With their crops and not taking time to come to market, and to the further fact that tobacco is mostly all sold out aud not much remains to be brought to maiket. Those who did venture to market last week were well repaid for the trouble it look to get ready to come, for prices were good aud buyers anxious for tin weed. Allgrades of tobacco are in active demand, espec-ially the common grades under fit 00 per hundred. and all good to fine wrap pers. Our buyers are still very anx-ious for the weed and are paying out-side prices ou everything ofleied on this market. Fatber and Mother Both Dead.
