"Whereas, The Miss Lake Brown is among the together in sacred things and that he has spoken to me upon the verities of our holy Christianity with a reverence almost too deep for words. Major .Stedman has not been a model church-man as regards attendance on the stated ministry of the Word, and this may have been used to his prejudice: but I know (for he has spoken freely to me on the subjebt) that bin high ideal of what such a one ought to be, and his modest estimate of his own spir-itual attainments, have deterred him. A mistake, it may have been, a mis-take, I think it was, but the mistake of a man who detests cant and abhors hypocrisy. He a skeptic! It is not true. As well might you attempt to convince me that Charles M. Stedmau is false to the memory of his mother as that he does not, with every faculty of his mind, aud I trust all the power of his heart, adore the God of the Bible and the Savior of tne race. I do not theorize: I testify. Speak of character, it is a melancholy commentary upon the evil days on which we have fallen in the Old North State when such ar-rows of detraction can be shot at such character without exciting an outburst of public indignation. Why, sir, my baby boy, who will deign to greet no other stranger, watches for his coining, as he daily passes by my home on his way to his office, and runs to meet him with an infant's unerring instinct for the tender, the loving, the noble and the true. His is a nature that might 'wear the shield of Bayard or Sidney's plume of snow.' "Mr. Chairman, I count it an honor to call Charles M. Stedman my friend; and whether, at tv e coming election, his gray locks shall wear a chaplet placed there by the suffrages of a grateful people in appreciation of in-trinsic manhood aud that historic he-roism to which we of a younger gener-ation can pay tribute but for a little while longer, or, when nature's grest deht is paid, wear only the ornament of its unsullied whiteness, I shall ever love and admire the character of Charles Manly Stedman." At the conclusion of Dr. Battle's re-marks, Judge Strudwick asked if "any one was brave enough to add anything else?" The answer was applause aud after the entire assemblage had pledged itself to Major Stedman, a permanent Major organization was effected as follows: President—Judge K. C. Strudwick. Vice Presidents—Dr. W. A. Lash, GREEHSB0R0 TOBACCO MARKET. The Strength of a Bank Is represented by its capital, surplus and careful management. The Southern ention given to collections. The receipts ou our market for the pact week have not been as large as they were the previous week: in fact, sales are getting right light, due to the fact that the farmers in this section are pretty nearly all sold out, and those few who have tobacco yet on hand are so busy they are unable to handle it aud get it ready for market. The prices on all grades remain about the same except ou good medium fillers, which seems to be a shade lower on all the markets. All other grades seem to be holding up well and farmers are high-ly pleased with their prices even with this Change. It will soon be time for new tobacco aud our buyers are straight-ening up all their old tobacco and get-ting ready for the new, so we would re-spectfully urge all farmers having to-bacco yet on hand to make an extra ef-fort to put it on the market at an early date. The market is active aud our buyers seem to want the weed at good prices. Capt. J. W. Forbis, of this county, made a fair sale on this market last Friday. Oscar Payne and John Mosely, of Kockiugham's good farmers, were on the market the past week with tobacco. W. H. Brookbank, of Rockingham, was here during the past week with to-bacco aud well pleased with his sale*• L. L. Sellers and J. M. Miss Lake Brown is among the

has spoken to me upon the verities of
our holy Christianity with a reverence
almost too deep for words. Major
.Stedman has not been a model church-man
as regards attendance on the
stated ministry of the Word, and this
may have been used to his prejudice:
but I know (for he has spoken freely to
me on the subjebt) that bin high ideal
of what such a one ought to be, and
his modest estimate of his own spir-itual
attainments, have deterred him.
A mistake, it may have been, a mis-take,
I think it was, but the mistake
of a man who detests cant and abhors
hypocrisy. He a skeptic! It is not
true. As well might you attempt to
convince me that Charles M. Stedmau
is false to the memory of his mother as
that he does not, with every faculty of
his mind, aud I trust all the power of
his heart, adore the God of the Bible
and the Savior of tne race. I do not
theorize: I testify. Speak of character,
it is a melancholy commentary upon
the evil days on which we have fallen
in the Old North State when such ar-rows
of detraction can be shot at such
character without exciting an outburst
of public indignation. Why, sir, my
baby boy, who will deign to greet no
other stranger, watches for his coining,
as he daily passes by my home on his
way to his office, and runs to meet him
with an infant's unerring instinct for
the tender, the loving, the noble and
the true. His is a nature that might
'wear the shield of Bayard or Sidney's
plume of snow.'
"Mr. Chairman, I count it an honor
to call Charles M. Stedman my friend;

his gray locks shall wear a chaplet

grateful people in appreciation of in-trinsic
manhood aud that historic he-roism
to which we of a younger gener-ation
can pay tribute but for a little
while longer, or, when nature's grest
deht is paid, wear only the ornament
of its unsullied whiteness, I shall ever
love and admire the character of
Charles Manly Stedman."
At the conclusion of Dr. Battle's re-marks,
Judge Strudwick asked if "any

MARKET REPORT.
The receipts ou our market for the
pact week have not been as large as
they were the previous week: in fact,
sales are getting right light, due to the
fact that the farmers in this section are
pretty nearly all sold out, and those
few who have tobacco yet on hand are
so busy they are unable to handle it
aud get it ready for market. The prices
on all grades remain about the same
except ou good medium fillers, which
seems to be a shade lower on all the
markets. All other grades seem to be
holding up well and farmers are high-ly
pleased with their prices even with
this Change. It will soon be time for
new tobacco aud our buyers are straight-ening
up all their old tobacco and get-ting
ready for the new, so we would re-spectfully
urge all farmers having to-bacco
yet on hand to make an extra ef-fort
to put it on the market at an early
date. The market is active aud our
buyers seem to want the weed at good
prices.
Capt. J. W. Forbis, of this county,
made a fair sale on this market last
Friday.
Oscar Payne and John Mosely, of
Kockiugham's good farmers, were on
the market the past week with tobacco.
W. H. Brookbank, of Rockingham,

aud well pleased with his sale*•
L. L. Sellers and J. M. Story, of Ala-mance

prices.
Geo. Oliver and James Dawson, from
the Stokesdale section of this county,

satisfactory sale.

of working tobacco for which he aver-aged
