Annual Meeting of the Greensboro Tobacco Association. The annual meeting of the Greens-boro Tobacco Association was held last Thursday, when the work of the past year was gone over carefully : and plans mapped out for future operations. The president, secretary, and the treasurer all made ex-haustive reports, which showed that the Greensboro tobacco market had made great progress during the year just closed. There was a considerable increase in the number of pounds sold over the previous year, while the aver-age price paid was 50 per cent, higher. ■ This speaks volumes for our tobacco market, but is no more than should have been expected from our live and progressive tobacconists. But Monday afternoon officer Will Scott arrested a suspicious character who afterwards turned out to be the guilty party. A two dollar and a half gold piece which had been stolen from James E. Watlington, and which the suspected culprit had given in payment for some whiskey at a saloon, was the clue upon which the arrest was made. Several persons whose houses had been entered identi-fied the man, and he was placed in jail to await the December term of superi-or court. The theif is a negro, giving his name as Richard Cohen, and claim-ing to bail from South Carolina. Yes-terday afternoon as Officer Scott was carrying the negro back to jail from his trial Cohen snatched the police-man's clnb from Mr. Scott.'band and struck him two blows over the head. In a twinkling the officer had his re-volver in his prisoners' face, which persnaded the negro to surrender the "billy." In addition to the members of the local bar. quite a num-ber of lawyers from a distance were present to do honor to the memory of this great and good man. A biograph-ical sketch of the deceased Judge, which has already been published in the PA-TRIOT, was read. The committee heretofore on reso-lutions submitted the following : "Judge Dick was of so well rounded character as to make it difficult to de-termine which of his many noble and good traits most commended him to the Bar and to his fellow men. As a lawyer, as a literary man, as an ora-tor, as a patriot, as a neighbor acd as a citizen, he had few equals. His Christian character, his sociability his kindness to the younger members of the profession and bis large charity to all, caused him to be loved aud vener-ated by all who came in contact with him. "That he had the confidence, respect and esteem of his fellow citizens with-out regard to vocation is fully evi-denced by the many positions of trust and of honor which it was his fortune to hold, both in troublous times of war and happy days of peace." Next comes the resolutions : "Resolved, That in the death of Hon. Robt. P. Dick the State has lost one of her noble and patriotic sons. The legal profession an exemplar worthy to be followed, and the com-munity in which he lived a venerated and honored citizen. "That the District Attorney pre-sent these resolutions to Judge Ewart in open Court and request that they be spread upon the records. "That a copy of these proceedings be furnished the press for publication, and ajcopy be delivered to the family of the deceared with an assurance of the Bar of their sympathy. "JOHN- GRAY BYXUM, "ALFORD E. HOLTON, "ROBERT W. WINSTON. "LEVI M. SCOTT. "JAMES T. MOREHEAD, "Committee." Judge Ewart and several of the law-yer, made a few remarks applicable to the occasion, after which the meeting adjourned. TOBACCO MARKET RSPOBT. [Reported by Bray Bros.. The quality of I the tobacco offered for sale was quite | poor and reminded one somewhat of a ' .ale on an Eastern Virginia market, ..till there wa. a good sprinkling of I good colored tobacco mixed along with lit. The prices on all medium to fine i grades held up remarkablv well, but the common grades .bowed sign, of ! weakening toward the latter part of the week. Annual Meeting of the Greensboro
Tobacco Association.
The annual meeting of the Greens-boro
Tobacco Association was held
last Thursday, when the work of the
past year was gone over carefully :
and plans mapped out for future
operations. The president, secretary,
and the treasurer all made ex-haustive
reports, which showed that
the Greensboro tobacco market had
made great progress during the year
just closed. There was a considerable
increase in the number of pounds sold
over the previous year, while the aver-age
price paid was 50 per cent, higher. ■
This speaks volumes for our tobacco
market, but is no more than should
have been expected from our live and
progressive tobacconists.
The following compose the officers
and committees for the ensuing year:
President—E. J. Stafford.
Vice President—C. A. Bray.
Secretary—John W. King.
Treasurer—W. E. Bevill.
Sales Committee—J. F. Jordan, J. S.

around Greensboro and carrying away
whatever he chanced to find that suited
hia fancy, (juite a number of houses
have been entered, and it seemed as if
the thief were too elusive for our vigi-lant
officers. But Monday afternoon
officer Will Scott arrested a suspicious
character who afterwards turned out
to be the guilty party. A two dollar
and a half gold piece which had been
stolen from James E. Watlington, and
which the suspected culprit had given
in payment for some whiskey at a
saloon, was the clue upon which the
arrest was made. Several persons
whose houses had been entered identi-fied
the man, and he was placed in jail
to await the December term of superi-or
court. The theif is a negro, giving
his name as Richard Cohen, and claim-ing
to bail from South Carolina. Yes-terday
afternoon as Officer Scott was
carrying the negro back to jail from
his trial Cohen snatched the police-man's
clnb from Mr. Scott.'band and
struck him two blows over the head.
In a twinkling the officer had his re-volver
in his prisoners' face, which
persnaded the negro to surrender the
"billy." Luckily Mr. Scott was not
badly hurt by the blows on his head.

—Judge Ewart is impartial and
painstaking in handling cases in the

In Memory of Judge Dick.
A meeting of the bar was held in the
court house in memory of the late
Judge R. P. Dick. In addition to the
members of the local bar. quite a num-ber
of lawyers from a distance were
present to do honor to the memory of
this great and good man. A biograph-ical
sketch of the deceased Judge, which
has already been published in the PA-TRIOT,
was read.
The committee heretofore on reso-lutions
submitted the following :
"Judge Dick was of so well rounded
character as to make it difficult to de-termine
which of his many noble and
good traits most commended him to
the Bar and to his fellow men. As
a lawyer, as a literary man, as an ora-tor,
as a patriot, as a neighbor acd as
a citizen, he had few equals. His
Christian character, his sociability his
kindness to the younger members of
the profession and bis large charity to
all, caused him to be loved aud vener-ated
by all who came in contact with
him.
"That he had the confidence, respect
and esteem of his fellow citizens with-out
regard to vocation is fully evi-denced
by the many positions of trust
and of honor which it was his fortune
to hold, both in troublous times of war
and happy days of peace."
Next comes the resolutions :
"Resolved, That in the death of
Hon. Robt. P. Dick the State has lost
one of her noble and patriotic sons.
The legal profession an exemplar
worthy to be followed, and the com-munity
in which he lived a venerated
and honored citizen.
"That the District Attorney pre-sent
these resolutions to Judge Ewart
in open Court and request that they
be spread upon the records.
"That a copy of these proceedings be
furnished the press for publication,
and ajcopy be delivered to the family of
the deceared with an assurance of the
Bar of their sympathy.
"JOHN- GRAY BYXUM,
"ALFORD E. HOLTON,
"ROBERT W. WINSTON.
"LEVI M. SCOTT.
"JAMES T. MOREHEAD,
"Committee."
Judge Ewart and several of the law-yer,
made a few remarks applicable to
the occasion, after which the meeting
adjourned.
TOBACCO MARKET RSPOBT.
[Reported by Bray Bros.. I-eaf Tobacco Dealers. |
The receipts on our market during
the early part of the week were rath-er
light, but as the week advanced
the top wagon, began to roll in from
various parts of the country and to-bacco
showed up in large quantities.
The sales got to be very heavy be-fore
the week ended. The quality of
I the tobacco offered for sale was quite
| poor and reminded one somewhat of a
' .ale on an Eastern Virginia market,
..till there wa. a good sprinkling of
I good colored tobacco mixed along with
lit. The prices on all medium to fine
i grades held up remarkablv well, but
the common grades .bowed sign, of
! weakening toward the latter part of
the week.
Taking the business of the week as a
whole, the farmers were highly pieased
, with their prices and expressed them-selves
as being sufficiently pleased to
return again this week with another
load.
In summing up the business, would
