The little stranger has settled down to the enjoyment of the necessarily limited infantile bless-ings of life in a manner that is grati-fying. — Lawrence Carlton, a private in the Queen City Guards, Charlotte, was ar-rested at Camp Grimes last week on a charge of theft, committed at Durham early last month. Carlton came from Durham to Greensboro and worked insurance for a while, and after steal-ing a few things here went on to Salis-bury and Charlotte, where he enlisted in the army under the name of E. L. Gore. —Mr. J. A. Morgan, a brakeman on the Southern, whose home was at: Brown Summit, was fround dead be- I side the track at Lynchburg Friday morning, presumably having been I knocked from his train by an overhead bridge the night previous. His bedy was horribly mangled. The remains were interred at Gethsemane Saturday. A wife and two children survive Mr. Morgan. —Over five hundred people went to Raleigh Saturday on Bogart's excur-sion. The afternoon was most pleas-antly spent there, Camp Grimes fur-nishing the chief attraction. The Greensboro boys were delighted to see so .many home folks and showed them every attention. Capt. Gray and his men were all in good health and good spirits and were rapidly becoming ac-customed to their new mode of living. —Mrs. Wilhelmina Maus Heberling, aged sixty-three years, who has made her home here the past two years with her daughter, Mrs. H. Jacobs,on Beile-meade avenue, died Friday morning and was buried Saturday afternoon at I four o'clock. Mrs. Heberling formerly i resided in Baltimore. Two children,! Mrs. Jacobs at.d Mr. Chas. Maus, sur-vive her. They have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. —A stranger named Bradley, who might on general appearances pass for a Spaniard but whose Irish brogue re-fuses to be suppressed, courted trouble Saturday by his disparaging reflections on the U. S. army and navy. Had he not been under the influence of liquor his remarks would have led him into serious difficulty. Fortunately, for him, he was landed in the coolerby the police before harm befell him. After he had fully sobered up he expressed a desire to join the army and help lick Spain. —The Wilmingtod Star is authority for the statement that Mr. Michael Schenck, of this city and recently of the Oak Ridge Institute faculty, has accepted a position in the office of Mr. T. M. Emerson, traffic manager of the Atlantic Coast Line, with headquar-ters at Wilmington. Mike is one of the cleverest young men of our ac-quaintance and we are certain he will perform his new duties most accepta-bly. He was released by Professors Holt before the close of the term at Oak Ridge. The City Fathers Legislate. At the meeting of the board of alder-men I riday evening the special com-mittee o„ the propped change in the Battle Ground road reported in favor of straightening the road from the top of the hill alongside Greene Hill ceme-tery to a point just beyond the water-works, thereby avoiding so manv rail-road crossings. Alderman McS'inney moved report be accepted and that the road be opened by the street commit-tee on receipt of deeds from the prop-erty owners. Carried. Action on the proposition of W. H. Houghton relative to an electric light and street railway system was indefi-nitely postponed. The Greensboro Electric Light and Power Co. was al-lowed to withdraw its certified checu for |500. Mr. T. J. Shaw was elected alder-man from the second ward to succeed Mr. Frazier, resigned. The official bonds (*500 each) of po-lice officers Jordan, Jeffries, Pearce, Weatherly, Whittington and Scott were tiled and approved. j A petition from the citizens of South j Greensboro asking for the appoint- I ment of an additional officer for that j section of the city was referred to po-i lice committee. A petition from the citizens of Cone-ville asking that Mr. Amraons be vest-ed with police powers, without ex-pense to the city, was also referred to the police committee. An ordinance was passed requiring auctioneers to pay a city tax of one per cent, on gross sales of merchan-dise. James R. Pearce was granted license as auctioneer. He filed his bond of $500, which was accepted. Messrs. C. H. Ireland and J.R. Men-denhall were re-elected members of the board of education. Tbe office hours of the city clerk were fixed at from 7.30 A. M. to 1 P. M., and from 2.30 to 6 P. M.: the office to be open on Sundays from 10 to 11 A. M. for the issuance of burial per-mits. I PRINTER.! of Charlotte, returned home yesterday after a visit to her father, Mr. B. E. .Sergeant. — Messrs. J. H. Gilmer and G. A. Smith left Monday for Washington. Waketield's next visit to Greensboro will be on Fridav after- —Secretary J. B. Sherrill has sent out circulars announcing that the an-nual meeting of the Xorth Carolina Press Association will be held at Waynesville in June, beginning either I the 22nd or 23rd, the exact date to be determined by the executive commit-tee in a few days. According to Mr. Sherrill's circular, the association will be entertained by the people of Waynes-ville at the Haywood White Sulphur Springs Hotel, a famous hostelry, and the meeting promises to be one of the most enjoyable in the history of the organization. —The Maine Memorial Light In-fantry, an organization of colored men, was effected at the court house Mon-day evening, with the following offi-cers: Captain, J. E. Dellinger: lieu-tenants, S. E. Russell and R. L. C. Sloan; sergeants, L. W. Graves and W. II. Kuble; corporals. Watson Law, J. W. Hargrove, John Dalrymple and Sam Lucas: musicians, J. C. One of those distressing accidents peculiar to railroading occurred on the C. F. & Y. V. near Summertield Sun-day morning, resulting in the death of one of the company's most efficient and trustworthy men, Mr. George Long, whose home was near the scene of the deplorable occurrence. Mr. Long was a flagman on the ! freight which runs between this city and Mt. Airy. Sunday morning about live o'clock, as his train was ascending a grade near Summertield a coupling broke and he went forward to renew it. The task was all the more difficult because of the heavy grade, and he was compelled to walk along between the cars, which were constantly in motion. Making a misstep he fell, his right leg resting on the rail, and before the train could be stopped the cruel wheels had almost severed the limb near the hip, leaving it hanging to his body connect-ed by only a narrow strip of flesh. He was at once brought to the city, and as soon as he could be moved from the station was taken to the Astley Cooper hospital, where Drs. Michaux, Wilson and Brooks made the utmost endeavor to save bis life, but without avail. Without regaining consciousness the young man lingered until about one o'clock, when the feeble spark of life flickered for the last time and was gone. Mr. Long's mother and brother and Dr. Davis came to the city with him and were by his side when the end came. His remains were prepared for interment and sent to Summertield, where the funeral occurred Monday. He enjoyed tbe esteem of his friends and associates and his death is a source of bitter sorrow to his family. His age was about twenty-six years. — We desire to c*ll your attention to the Washington excursion, the adver-tisement of which appears in this issue. It is a delightful trip at a very low price and gives two days and three nights in Washington. The scenery through the Shenandoah Valley is beautiful at this season and Washing-ton cannot be seen at a better time. It goes June 1st and returns June 4th. For schedule see the ad in this paper. Mr. Conrad, who ran tbe excursion from here last year over this route laal fall which gave such entire satiafaction, is at the head of this with bis nephew, Dr. W. J. Conrad, In Winston. Those who go will no doubt receive every courtesy and needed attention. Take Notice. The Tax Listers for Gilmer and Morehead townships will be found at the office of \v. R. Land, in rear of the Savings Bank, from June 1st to June 15th, and at the grand jury room from June loth to June 30th next. W. R. LAND for Kilmer, W. J. EDMCXOSUX for Morehead.
