W, S. Rankin has been quite sick for ten days but is improving at this writing. —The residence of Hon. D. F. Cald-well, on West Market street. Is under-going repairs. —The "rainy seasou" set in Saturday and we have had generous showers every day since. — Messrs. J. R. Mendenhall and R. W. Brooks are at Danbury this week attending court. —Prof. Bandy spent Sunday here with his family, returning to Troy Monday morning. —Miss Floreuce Trogdon. of Rock-ingham, came over last week to visit her brothers here. —The younger pupils of the Brock-luann School of Music gave a public : recital Friday evening. —Mr. J. S. C. Carpenter, manager of the North Carolina Benevolent Asso-ciation, was here Monday. —The sidewalk in front of Gardner's drug store has been improved mate-rially within the past week. —Alderman J. J. Thornton is recov-ering from a fortnight's sick spelt that pulied him down considerably. —Mr. Henry Farias, of Butte, Mont., is at home on a visit to his mother's family, on West Washington street. —They keep on coming our way. Over twenty new subscribers have been added to our list since our last issue. —The John Dundas farm of 350 acres, lying between Guilford College and Friendship, is advertised for sale in this issue. —Mrs. Alice Davidson, of Conover, is visiting in the city. When completed it will be one of the most attractive places in the city. —Misses Ethel and Jessie Thomas, cf Salem Academy, came home last week for a brief visit. The former graduates at the coming commence-ment. —The morning papers say that Mr. R. Percy Gray, of this city, who was in Raleigh yesterday, was given au-thority to recruit a company of infan-try here. —Whitsett's base ball team was de-feated the Greensboro team Friday af-ter an interesting contest, the score standing 17 to 9. The attendance was not large. —The Mt. Airy Granite Co. is work-ing night and day to supply the gov-ernment with crushed granite that is being used in strengthening the coast fortitications. —Mr. I>. M. Ausley, the C. F. A Y. V. agent at Mt. Airy, and Miss Edith Faueette, of that city, were married last Thursday and are in the north on a wedding tour. —A revival meeting is in progress this week at the West Washington Street Baptist church. The pastor, Rev. L. Johnson, is assisted by Rev. Thus.
