In the 30 years since Kitty
Vandegrift lost her hair, she has struggled to understand why something so devastating happened to her—until
now. Today, Kitty, Lead IV Therapy Nurse on third shift, has turned her loss into a successful program which
helps cancer patients cope with hair loss.
The Moses H. Cone Regional Cancer Center's Oncology Alopecia Consultation Program, developed by Kitty in
1991, teaches cancer patients what to expect from hair loss and how to select a wig or turban that's right for them.
"How we feel about ourselves is so important that the cancer can become unimportant," Vandegrift explained.
