THE • MOSES • H • CONE ® MEMORIAL. HOSPITAL October, 1989 New Vice President of Nursing Announced Nancy J. Higgerson, R.N., B.S.N., M.A., will be joining the administration of Moses Cone Hospital on October 30 as Vice President of Nursing. After an extensive national search, Ms. Higgerson was chosen from a field of candidates for this leadership position in nursing services. She is currently Vice President of Nursing at Life Span, Inc., in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has held nursing administration positions at a number of other hospitals including Abbott-Northwestern and Health Affiliates, Inc., both in Minneapolis; South Miami Hospital in Florida; and St. Luke's Hospital Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She has received a number of distinctions in nursing including the 1985 Distinguished Alumni, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville School of Nursing award, the 1985 Johnson & Johnson-Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurses at the University of Pennsylvania, and the 1987 Constance Moline Award by the Minnesota Organization of Nurse Executives. Ms. Higgerson maintains professional memberships in the American Organization of Nurse Executives, American Hospital Asso ciation, National League of Nursing, American Society of Nursing Service Administrators and the National Commission on Nursing. She received her nursing diploma from Missouri Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and was honored as the top scholar in her freshman and senioryears. She then studied at the Southern Illinois University where she graduated with honors with her bachelor of science in nursing. Her masters of arts in nursing service administration is from the University of Iowa. As a staff nurse, she has experience working in medical-surgical, psychiatry, intensive care and rehabilitation. Three MCH Nurses Honored In Top 100 In State Ed Kirkpatrick, Clinical Director of Medical Surgical Services, Jean Mabe, Head Nurse on Division 2000, and Judy Webb, Clinician on the Mother-Baby Unit, were three of the honorees at the "R.N. Excellence: The Great 100" banquet in Raleigh on September 9. The three were chosen by a committee of Registered Nurses from among nominees representing 44 counties statewide. They were selected on the basis of their professional qualities and their contributions to a positive image of nursing in their communities. All 5,300 active registered nurses in North Carolina were eligible to be nominated for "The Great 100" recognition. This special recognition was organized to salute registered nurses from all of North Carolina who demonstrate excellence in practice and commitment to their profession, as well as increase public awareness about the nursing profession, and raise funds for nursing scholarships. Moses Cone Hospital was a Patron sponsor of the event, contributing $1,000 to the nursing scholarship fund. Lanty Smith Named To Board Lanty L. Smith has been named to the Board of Trustees of The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Mr. Smith is Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of Precision Fabrics Group, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high-technology specification textile products. Prior to organizing Precision Fabrics, Mr. Smith worked for Burlington Industries for 11 years. He joined Burlington as Executive Vice President and Senior General Counsel. He was appointed President of Burlington in 1986, a position he held until 1988. Mr. Smith is a member of the Board of Directors of First Union Corporation. He is also a Director of W.R. Bonsai Company, the United Way of Greater Greensboro and the North Carolina Institute of Politics, Inc. He is a member of the Board of Visitors of Duke University Law School, Guilford College and A&T State University and of the Business Advisory Board of the Bryan School of Business and Economics of the University of North Carolinaat Greensboro. He is also a member of the Board of Associates at the Center for Creative Leadership and a trustee of Greensboro Day School and Greensboro Life-Care Retirement Community, Inc. Mr. Smith is a native of Sherrodsville, Ohio. He is married to the former Margaret Hays Chandler of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, who is a member of the faculty of University of North Carolina at Greensboro. They have three daughters, and they reside in Greensboro. Anita Sherer Honored In Nursing Excellence Judy Webb, Chairperson of the Nursing Excellence Committee; Anita Sherer, Nursing Excellence Award Winner; and Kaye Lani Rafko, Miss America 1988; pose at the Nursing Excellence Ceremony. This year's Nursing Excellence Day was an exciting and gala event celebrating and honoring nursing. The 24 nurses who were nominated for this year's award represented both Moses Cone and Greensboro Hospitals. They all demonstrated excellence in practice and each were winners for having received a nomination. Anita P. Sherer, R.N, M.S.N., was selected from the nominees to receive this year's award. Anita is a Clinical Nurse Specialist on Division 5100, the Medical Telemetry Unit at Moses Cone Hospital. She has held this position since September of 1988 when she joined the staff at Moses Cone Hospital. Anita has been a nurse since 1982 when she became a Staff Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She worked on a general medical/surgical unit before joining the coronary care unit at St. Mary's. She then joined the staff at Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia working on the coronary care (Continued - Page 2)
