THE GUILFORD COUNTY MEDICAL SOCIETY AUXILIARY
Special guests at the recent luncheon of the Guilford County Medical Society Auxiliary were
recipients of the auxiliary's annual scholarships awarded to women training in the health professions.
Each year, the auxiliary awards two UNCG School of Nursing Scholarships in honor of Nell Hendrix
Knight and one scholarship to a high school senior planning to enter a health occupations career in
honor of Jean Embry Frazer.
The Nell Hendrix Knight Scholarships are in honor of Mrs. W. P. Knight, affectionately known as
"Mama Nell." During her term as president of the State Medical Society Auxiliary, 1932-33, she
established the State Student Loan Fund. This fund is available to "worthy individuals for their use in
their junior and senior years of study and training in medicine, nursing and allied fields." This year's
recipients are Donna Watson Turpin and Donna Marie Harrington, both of Greensboro. Currently
both have finished their junior year of studies.
In 1979, the Jean Embry Scholarship was established in honor of Mrs. Joe Frazer. Mrs. Frazer
served as president of the Guilford County Medical Society Auxiliary in 1972-73. This year's
recipient is Hang Ly, a senior at Smith High School. Miss Ly plans to pursue studies in pharmacology.
