GREENSBORO ACADEMY OF MEDICINE January 28, 1971 The Greensboro Academy of Medicine met in the second floor ballroom of the Hilton Inn. The meeting was called to order at 7:25 P.M. by the President, Dr.Robert Phillips. The first order of business was the reading of the minutes from the October meeting and the presentation of the treasurer's report by Dr. Howard Wainer. This was followed by a report by Dr. Robert Whitener for the committee on the Task Force for Drugs. Dr. Whitener gave a detailed report which includes the availability of private consultation with the drug problem. Also, his group plans to ask the State Legislature for funds to be used by the counties for rehabilitation. Associated with the group are other groups such as the Drug Action Council (funded by the United Community Services), the Tate Street Switchboard, Outrage (an organization run by the ministry), two rehabilitation houses run by a minister, the Mental Health Center, and the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Committee. Dr. Whitener announced a program on Channel 4 television on Monday nights from eight to nine on four consecutive weeks. Dr. Whitener's presentation ended with his presenting a motion that the Greensboro Academy of Medicine contribute one hundred dollars ($100) to the Drug Action Council to buy literature. This literature is to be handed out free to visitors to the Drug Action Council. The motion was passed without any dissent. Dr. Richard Kelly gave a report for the Advisory Committee of the Mental Health Clinic. Progress toward the taking over of 27 beds at L.Richardson Memorial Hospital for mental patients has been reported. Dr. Jim Bruce reported on the Symposium which is set for the 25th of March. This series of events will include this year the Herman Cone Lecture, the evening of the 24th of March. Dr. Robert Finch has become unavailable for the Herman Cone Lecture and the Committee is presently trying to get Dr. George Birch to do this lecture. The symposium itself will feature a panel discussion on "The Delivery of Health Care" with Dr. William Herring as moderator and which is to include Dr. Birch. Dr. Robert Phillips then gave his thanks to Dr. Adrian Rubin, outgoing program chairman, Dr. Howard Wainer, outgoing secretary-treasurer, Dr. Ernest Spangler, membership chairman, Dr. Benjamin Vatz for his liason work with the Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Joseph LeBauer for the 1970 Symposium, Dr. Marshall Morris for the sports injury Symposium, Dr. Julian Barker for the picnic in August, the OB-GYN men who did the forum on abortions in September, Dr. Van Gunter for his continuing work on the Symposium, and Dr. Donald Cone, the incoming secretary-treasurer.
