Anyone interested in reviewing the information, should contact Medical Staff Services at 854-6294. DID YOU KNOW? Terminal Care and Hospital Continued Stay Denials 1) Medicare does not grant "blanket" approvals to terminal patients. 2) Patients must continue to meet severity of illness and intensity of service criteria for Medicare to cover the expenses of the hospital stay. 3) In the event that the patient is terminal, but does not meet the intensity of service required for acute in-hospital stay, the physician and family are faced with the following three options: • The patient can be placed in a nursing home if IV medications and supportive care are required. • If the patient is on PO or subcutaneous medications and the family is willing, the patient can return home with the support of Hospice or Home Health Care. • The patient can remain in the hospital if the family agrees to cover the expenses after the issuance of a Hospital Continued Stay Denial. Please address these options with the family and/or contact Social Work/ Utilization Review for further assistance in these matters at 854-6295. INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION OF BENZODIAZEPINES It is often assumed that injecting a drug intramuscularly assures that it will be completely and rapidly absorbed into the systemic circulation and thus reach the desired site of action.
