1859 Born January 10, in Randolph Co., N.C.
1863 Dr. Long's father, John Wesley Long, Sr., died.
1872 Ran away from home
1881 Read medicine under preceptor, Dr. John F. Miller, Goldsboro,
N.C.
1883 Graduated from Vanderbilt University
1884 Graduated from University of Nashville. Licensed and joined
the North Carolina Medical Society. Began private practice
in Randleman, N.C. Married Mary Elizabeth Troy Woollen.
Began to write and lecture extensively.
1887 Helped found the Southern Surgical and Gynecological
Association.
1891 Second Vice-President of the North Carolina Medical Society.
Chairman of the Section on Gynecology. Secretary of the
Randolph County Medical Society.
1892 Orator for the North Carolina Medical Society.
1893 Professor of Diseases of Women and Children, Medical College
of Virginia. Introduced operative gynecology to the Medical
College of Virginia.
1894 Mary, his nine-year old daughter, died of diphtheric
laryngitis. Fellow of the American Association of
Obstetricians and Gynecology.
1896 Employed the first cystoscope in Virginia.
1897 Began general surgical practice in association with Dr. John
Whitehead, Salisbury, N.C.
1903 Began practice in Greensboro, N.C.
1904 Appointed to the State Board of Medical Examiners for the
nurses.
1906 Delegate from the Guilford Medical Society to the State
Medical Society.
1909 President of the Virginia-North Carolina Good Roads
Association.
1910 Chairman of the Section of Gynecology for the State of N.C.
1912 President of the Guilford County Medical Society.
1913 President of the Southern Surgical and Gynecological
Association. Charter Member of the American College of
Surgeons. Appointed as a Trustee to Moses H. Cone Memorial
Hospital.
1914 Delegate from the State of North Carolina to the Association
