MEMORANDUM
TO: BOB PHILLIPS, M. D.
FROM: TIM CLONTZ
DATE: NOVEMBER 14, 1995
SUBJECT: COMMENTS ON PAGE 27 RE: CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM
I have listed below some details regarding the construction program of the "1980's."
1. March 1985-Board of Trustees (BOT) rejects proposed $32 million construction project
as it wiH raise rates to an unacceptable level. Ralph Holthouser
resigns.
2. May 1985-Facilities Planning and Equipment Committee reports that VWkerson Associates
and Hospital Staff have reduced project to $22 million. Architects begin
work on project.
3. April 1986-Davidson and Jones Construction Co. of Raleigh, N. C. begins work.
4. July 1986-Managing contractor, Davidson and Jones Construction Co. of Raleigh, N. C,
reports "slippage" in schedule.
5. January 1987-Hospital and Davidson and Jones obtain a "no-fault divorce."
McDevitt and Street Construction Co. of Charlotte, N. C. hired as the
managing contractor. Project is now $25 million.
6. May 11, 1987-McDevitt & Street provided "Notice To Proceed"; they begin work on
May 21, 1987.
6. Summer 1988-New construction facing Elam Avenue completed and occupied.
7. Fall 1989-New Outpatient Entrance completed and occupied.
8. October 30, 1990-Construction project "substantially complete."
9. The original project budget was almost exactly $25 million. VWiile I could not find the sum
in the minutes, I believe it was $25,080,200-so $25 million is
appropriate.
If you would like additional information regarding this construction program, please call me.
In addition, if you desire information on the "Vasculari Suite Addition" to the Operating Room
or the renovation of the The Family Birthplace, I can jaccommodate you.
