Th* FIFTH MAJOR ADDITION BEGINS AS HOSPITAL ENTERS FOURTH DECADE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE Approximately 30 years after The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital first opened its doors to the community, groundbreaking ceremonies were taking place for the hospital's fifth major addition to the original structure. Greensboro Mayor John Forbis, a keynote speaker at the January 16 ceremonies, commended the hospital, its trustees, the hospital staff and medical staff for the caliber of care provided at Moses Cone Hospital through the years. "I suspect that you provide care as fine as is available anywhere in the country," he said. Dr. Stuart Bondurant, Dean of the School of Medicine, University of North Carolina, cited, in his groundbreaking ceremonies address, statistics such as a 50 percent reduction in maternity death rates occurring in this area since Moses Cone Hospital began providing health care and health education. The groundbreaking marked the beginning of a multiphased construction and renovation project aimed at creating essentially a new facility. Following construction of this new wing, older sections of the hospital will be renovated to create new patient care areas. Construction of the new wing is scheduled for completion in the Fall of 1984. As soon as major portions of the new wing are completed, renovations on sections of the existing facility will begin. The total building and renovation project will be completed in the Fall of 1985. The principal contractor for the project is McDevitt and Street General Contractors of Charlotte, North Carolina. Subcontractors for the project include two Greensboro firms, W. H. Sullivan Mechanical Contractors and Starr Electric Company. During peak periods, the project will employ 250 construction personnel. The cost of this new wing will be $18 million, which includes both building and equipment costs. The entire project, including renovations to the existing facility and new equipment, will be $30.8 million. The addition and renovations will be paid for principally with endowment funds and accumulated reserves. The new wing will house or provide for the following: Basement — additional storage and new mechanical space; Ground Floor — a new auditorium with 250 seating capacity; housing for AHEC; Staff Development, Medical Library, a Rehabilitation unit; expanded food services facilities and cafeteria; First Floor — new and expanded Laboratory and Pathology Department; audiovisual studio and control room; classroom/auditorium (90 person capacity); office of Graduate Medical Education; new switchboard facilities; new facilities for the Schools of Radiologic and Medical Technology; Second Floor — a 30-bed medical surgical patient unit; Third Floor — A 40-bed obstetrical/maternity patient unit. Mayor John Forbis (1) and Dr. Stuart Bondurant (r) give keynote addresses at groundbreaking ceremonies. Members of the Board of Trustees break ground.
