I would first like to thank everyone for the warm welcome and assistance
they have given me, and for getting our Rehabilitation Center started. We have
now had the experience of five or six discharges from the center, and the therapeutic
results have been excellent in most of these. In fact, we have received two written
statements from patients and families praising the care they received at the
Rehabilitation Center. Everyone deserves a pat on the back for these early
successes.
We all welcome several new staff members in the areas of Occupational Therapy,
Physical Therapy, and Nursing. Three team members have been involved in continuing
education programs. Anne Cole, RN, attended "The National Conference for Holistic
Health Care" in Asheville, North Carolina, which was a two-day seminar involving
therapeutic massage and touch. Sharon in Occupational Therapy and Sandra in
Physical Therapy will be attending a course entitled "An Integrated Approach to
CNS Dysfunction" at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Cone Rehabilitation
Center will also present a lecture to the MS Society one evening in September. Another
new and much-needed face in the Rehabilitation Department is 'secretary extraordinaire'
(he insisted this be included!) Mary Anne Routh, whose office will be on the 4000
uni t.
I'm sure by now everyone has noticed that we have a schedule board posted
on the unit, which should help in organizing each patient's day. Everyone's cooperation
will be necessary to ensure a high degree of efficiency in scheduling.
A stereo system has been placed in the patients' dayroom, and a television
set is expected soon. It is hoped that this will increase socialization amongst our
patients. Our first recreational therapy outing was a great success, as three patients
were transported to and from Friendly Shopping Center for the "Great Greensboro
Muscular Dystrophy Bed Race." Moses Cone Rehabilitation Center finished a hard-
fought third place, with a stunning custom bed designed and built by Facilities
Management. We are already preparing for a first-place finish in next year's race!
In September we are planning to have the first Rehabilitation Team Bash.
Everyone should plan to participate! Details will follow.
