Study identifies area health needs

- we're leading the way to better
health. A recent
study found that
greater Greensboro
residents need better
access to
preventive
and
primary
health care. The study
was conducted by the
Greater Greensboro
Community Health
Partnership, a 21-member group
formed by Moses Cone Health System

residents. The assessment is the first
step in a new Moses
Cone Health
System initiative
to improve the
community's
health status.
During
1995, the
partnership
randomly
distributed
a health
survey to 20,000 households
in Guilford County and conducted
eight focus groups to determine the
health needs of area residents. They
also reviewed key health statistics for
Guilford County, results of prior
needs assessments, listings of area
health-related agencies, and
programs across the country that
have been developed to address
unmet health needs.
After completing the study, the
partnership concluded that the
community's top priority health
needs are:
• improved access to preventive and
primary care services
• comprehensive health education
for school-aged children

Health-care providers find strength in numbers.
Managed care is not only changing the way hospitals
and physicians deliver health care, it's also changing how
hospitals and other health-care providers work together to
provide care. To reduce costs and improve quality, Moses
Cone Health System is forming alliances with local
physicians and other hospitals in the Triad and across
the state.
These partnerships, which are forming across the
country, allow hospitals and physicians to share services
such as information systems and purchasing. This pooled
strength enables providers to deliver more efficient, cost-
effective care.
"One of the hallmarks of successful health-care
organizations in the future will be their size and their
ability to use that size effectively," said James Roskelly, Vice
President of Planning and Development, Moses Cone
Health System.
