IV NURSE DAY JANUARY 25, 1983 INSIDE REVIEW JANUARY, 1983 ® Doris Meador Award 2 Communication For Deaf 2 Three Retire 3 Department Spotlight 4 "Too much of a good thing." It applies to visitors the way it applies to most things in life. Over the past few months, individuals representing various departments in the hospital have worked together to develop a new program to assist visitors in the hospital and to insure that patients get the rest they need. The program is designed to address a number of serious problems the volume of visitors has created. In recent months, the number of visitors in each patient's room, meals being eaten in the visitor areas and the number of people sleeping in the lobby have caused serious problems. This new visitors' assistance program is designed to help visitors and patients by clearly giving each visitor the rules and providing information for them such as where they can eat, how long they should visit with patients and how they can get assistance for concerns they may have. In addition to developing a clear set of rules for visitors, the program also developed a number of visual aids to make sure this information is available to visitors. New posters with information on number of visitors per patient, eating facilities in the hospital, smoking policy and other visitor aids are being placed in visitor areas. A brand new pamphlet for visitors has been developed and will be given to each visitor as they come into the institution. It reinforces these rules and provides maps of each floor of the hospital. The most important part of this visitor program, however, is the assistance each and every employee gives visitors. The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital has an excellent reputation for the way employees go out of their way to assist visitors. From now on, this assistance will mean not only helping a visitor find his or her way, but also tactfully reminding a visitor when he has broken these visitor rules. The problem will not disappear, but with an effort on the part of all employees, this situation should improve.
