review @ THE MOSES H. CONE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA Former Mayor Appointed To Hospital Board Mrs. Pickel Heads Volunteer Organization Edwin S. "Jim" Melvin, former Mayor of Greensboro, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. He will serve the unexpired term of Walter W. King, Jr., who died this past May. Mr. Melvin is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of First Home Federal Savings and Loan Association in Greensboro. The Greensboro native graduated from Greensboro Senior (now Grimsley) High School. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a bachelors degree in business administration and marketing. He also holds a masters degree in banking from Rutgers University. As Mayor Pro Tern, he served on the Greensboro City Council and was Mayor of the city from 1971 until 1981. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and of the United Way of Greater Green- boro. He is a past president of both the North Carolina League of Municipalities and the Greensboro Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was the 1968 General Chairman of the Greensboro United Fund Campaign. "Jim brings a great deal of expertise to our board," Moses Cone Hospital Board Chairman Charles "Buddy" Weill said. "His talents are in demand in this community and we are obviously very pleased that he has accepted the invitation to join our governing body. We are confident that this hospital and this community will benefit from his service." Mr. Melvin is married to the former Jean Susan Thomas and they have two sons, Joseph and James. 49 Entries in Photo Contest — Winners Announced This photograph of a young day dreamer won Best in Show for Merry Black in the first Hospital Photo Contest. Her photo also won first place in the black and white category. Priscilla Spoon's "Broken Ladder" photograph received second place honors in the black and white division and also received recognition for Best Composition. Both Ms. Black and Ms. Spoon are technicians in the hospital Laboratory. Ruth Ann Watson, Nursing Division 5000, won first place in the color division for her slide of "Sunrise at Myrtle Beach." Second place color category winner was Mitch Hayes, Respiratory Therapy Department. His entry was titled "Talking to Pooh Bear." Kathy Hayes, Emergency Department, placed third in the color division with her photo of a man and a child, and H. J. "Mac" McDaniel received honorable mention for his color photograph of Magnolia Street Baptist Church. Selecting winners from 49 good entries was not easy for judge Eddie Robinette, Graphics Director for the Greensboro Daily News and Record. Mrs. William (Ann) Snyder is Vice-President, Mrs. Robert (Mary Cecile) Bridges was re-elected Secretary and Mrs. Robert B. (Becky) Taylor, Jr. was re-elected Treasurer. Auxiliary officers are elected for a two-year term. Marie Cancemi Receives Nursing Excellence Award Marie Cancemi, RN, a staff nurse at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, was honored by her peers ithis fall when she was presented the second annual Nursing Excellence Award given by the hospital's Department of Nursing. Mrs. Cancemi was also recognized by the hospital in 1981 for her quick action in administering CPR to save the life of a patient. She successfully combines the roles of wife, mother and nurse. She is married to Joseph Cancemi, a certified public accountant, and is mother to two teenagers, Mike and Lisa Jolly. Prior to her ten years at Moses Cone Hospital, Mrs. Cancemi had served as an instructor of student nurses at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas, as a Head Nurse at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, Texas, as Assistant Head Nurse in a Philadelphia, Pa. hospital and had worked at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. She is a graduate of the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. "I am very pleased that nurses get this recognition from Moses Cone Hospital," she commented. "We have many excellent nurses here and I'm happy to represent them." Mr. Haddad Is Laundry Manager Larry J. Haddad has been named Laundry Manager at Moses Cone Hospital. A former Account Manager with Crothall- American, Inc., a firm which provides services to hospitals, his prior experience also includes restaurant management. Earlier, he served as a Health Education Specialist in the Illinois public school system. He is a graduate of the University of Toledo in Ohio.
