THE • MOSES • H • CONE ® MEMORIAL* HOSPITAL June, 1988 Board of Trustee Changes Announced The Board of Trustees of The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital has announced a new chairman of the board as well as appointing a new board member. Mr. William Lee Hemphill will assume the office of board chairman when Mr. Charles L. Weill, Jr., retires from the Board of Trustees in June. Mr. Weill has been chairman of the board since 1982 and has been a member of the board since 1981. Mr. Hemphill is the retired president and chief executive officer of United Guaranty Corporation which is a nationwide company dealing principally in the field of mortgage guaranty insurance. It is headquartered in Greensboro. He has served in a variety of public services positions. Mr. Hemphill was the first chairman of the Governor's Advisory Council on Vocational Education. He was president of the Greensboro Community Council which merged with United Way in Greensboro. He also served with the North Carolina Milk Commission. Mr. Hemphill and his wife Joan have two sons. Mr. Philip R. Gelzer will become a new Board of Trustees member in June. He will be taking the place of retired board member N. Perkinson Hayes, Jr. Mr. Hayes has served on the Moses Cone Hospital Board since 1979. Mr. Gelzer has served as the vice president of CIBA- GEIGY's Greensboro facility since 1980. He began his career with CIBA-GEIGY in 1951 by joining Geigy Chemical Corporation in NewYorkCity. He was instrumental in the decision to relocate the head quarters of the Dyestuffs and Chemicals Division to Greensboro in 1973. Mr. Gelzer is a member of the Greensboro Board of Directors of NCNB National Bank, the Boards of Directors of the Greensboro Develop ment Corporation, the Foundation of Greater Greensboro, and the fund for the Advancement of Sciences and Mathematics in North Carolina. He also serves on the Governor's Business Council on the Arts and Humanities, the Board of Visitors of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the Babcock Graduate School of Management of Wake Forest University, and the Board of Associates of the Center of Creative Leadership in Greensboro. In 1986, the Mayor of Greensboro appointed Mr. Gelzer chairman of GREENSBORO VISIONS, the public/private coalition forthedevelopment of a strategic plan for the Greensboro area. Mr. Gelzer and his wife Jo live in Greensboro. Celebrating a New Beginning* ♦ ♦ The conclusion of the ceremony was the unveiling of the sign and the release of balloons. Many of the balloons that were released carried a coupon with them that entitles the finder to a free first aid kit that can be picked up at Greensboro Hospital. A luncheon in the cafeteria followed the ceremony. It was complete with more balloons, sheet cakes, and the banner that was signed as a welcome from Moses Cone Hospital employees to Greensboro Hospital employees. Greensboro Hospital will continue to operate as a medical and surgical facility for the next year. Moses Cone Hospital had already begun transferring some patients from thei r emergency room to Greensboro Hospital on the first day of ownership. Additional patient transfers can be anticipated in the future. At midnight on June 1,1988, Humana Hospital Greensboro officially became Greensboro Hospital under the management and ownership of The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. A celebration was held beginning at 10:30 a.m. that day to welcome Greensboro Hospital to the Moses Cone Group of Health Care Services. A ceremony on the lawn at Greensboro Hospital included the unveiling of the new hospital sign and the release of hundreds of balloons. Mr. Jim Brexler, executive vice president of Greensboro Hospital, welcomed a group of over 100 employees, physicians, volunteers, board mem bers, and community leaders to the opening of the facility. He stressed his high expectations for the facility. "There are many Greensboro Hospital employees and volunteers I have had the opportunity to meet, and there are also some new faces in the crowd. I look forward to working with each of you and getting to know you better," Mr. Brexler said. Mr. Charles L Weill, Jr., former chairman of the Board of Trustees of Moses Cone Hospital, also welcomed everyone gathered. He went on to talk about the plans to convert the facility into a women's and infants' hospital in 1989. Two Greensboro Hospital employees read the banner that was signed by hundreds of Moses Cone Hospital employees. Barry, president of Moses Cone Hospital, then announced a new price structure that will go into effect at Greensboro Hospital within the next few weeks. "Through this facility, Moses Cone Hospital can extend its commitment of service to this community, and by implementing a cost structure similar to that at Moses Cone Hospital, can yield an annual savings to the community of approximately $2 million," Mr. Barry said. Mr. Dennis R. Barry, president of Moses Cone Hospital, welcomes employees and volunteers to Greensboro Hospital.
