May 29, 1992 Wesley Long started as Dr. Long's hospital in 1917.When he died, everyone,. who wasn't allowed to practice there suddenly started to practice...poor records and bankruptcy. 12 physicians baled it out and the hospital catered to these twelve, who were also on the medical board. The hospital has always catered to participating physicians....who had their way. Administration of AO Smith then Jim Phelps. Now it is the Wesley Long Community Hospital.John Schrull. HERO..Ignacio Bird... therapy to Cone. Many physicians have used Wesley Long because they have been alienated by Cone Hospital...past adminstrators and C. Cone. 2 cases in the morning at Cone, 5 at WL. Sam Sue. Extendicaire...application in 1971. Greensboro Hospital opened 1977. Chuck Gegick on original Board.They were asked to c>i»e.. .dissatisfied physicians. Humana came, made physicians first class citizens. Gave them a free breakfast, canoe trips, ACC tickets.*.it was amazing how little it took to woo some of the physicians but for once, they were out from under Caesar. Lo and behold, free coffee at Cone, the same at Wesley Long. Wesley Long did more than Cone. ...Dr. Relman also said Humana was bad...self serving...money and poor service. Also jumped on physicians who bought the expensive machines then self referred to these facilities ...many times when it was not medically indicated just to enhance revenue. However, Humana understood the power of the physician...no physician, no patients. A lesson in economics...for awhile then ethics took over and in 3 or 4 years, Chuck resigned..but was the only one..Humana served a purpose...be more responsive to physicians and the community. Wesley Long and Cone now giving coffee etc. Nice room with paper. Cone. We had to fight Caesar and because of that, there was flight from Caesar. All of the sub-specialties are well represented. Strong teaching hospital. Good mission statement. 1. Can there be a Greensboro medical authority? Such as ■ GJ£$Rn,yillff , S.C. Not probable but who knows... stranger things have happened. The medicai'starf in the past didn't care much... 1?he Boards wanted to preserve their autonomy. Strong personalties on both sides. Perhaps in the 60s and 70 and early 80s when we were evolving but I doubt that it would take place now but God knows, there could be improvement in relations. This community has always needed a good two hospital system...it was hoped that they could work in concert but too much hostility. We do have some shared services and they are working well. But may have a possible solution....in a minute. TOWN AND GOWN 2. In the two hospital community, Watts and Duke as example, the smaller hospital should be giving some indigent care...that will be spelled out by the IRS in the tax-exempt status. Support the urban free clinic. Mere than just headlines but all out effort. Big
