Dear Dr. Phillips:
I am very sorry that the reply to your letter of November 4th to
Mr. Scott Adams has been delayed so long. Mr. Adams asked me to
reply to your request for information inasmuch as the Extramural
Program of the National Library of Medicine eventually may be able
to provide some sort of financial assistance to medical libraries
for the acquisition of resources, but at the present time this type
of help is not available. It will be necessary for the Public Health
Service to obtain authorizing legislation from the Congress before
we can provide this type of assistance.
My interpretation of your letter, however, was that you are equally
interested in information regarding the substantive aspects of your
community hospital library. Therefore, I asked my assistant, who is
a librarian, to gather together some materials that might be of help
to you. In addition to these, you are probably familiar with the
papers Mr. Adams has written on hospital libraries. Mr. Adams also
mentioned that Helen Yast at the American Hospital Association has
helpful material.
Again, let me apologize for the long delay in replying to your inquiry
but It took some time to gather the enclosed materials. I hope they
will be of some interest and help to you.
Sincerely yours,
