New Group Plan Has Many Benefits On May 10, an improved Blue Cross-Blue Shield group insurance plan with much more liberal benefits will go into effect for all hospital employees enrolled in the present plan. All benefits under the former plan will continue and additionally the new plan provides benefits for nursery changes on the family certificate, intensive care, coronary care, newborn care in hospital, and radiation therapy. Previously none of these were paid for, except for $100 toward newborn care. Now all of these will be covered. Admissions for tuberculosis and mental illness were limited to 30 days in a general hospital. Now an admission can be for up to 70 days in a general hospital and TB sanatorium or mental hospital. Also, 30- day benefits will be paid for admis- (Continued on Page 7) Trustees, Department Heads Are Studying Expansion Plans For many months members of the Joint Planning Committee, composed of Trustees and Medical Staff representatives, have worked with various department heads studying possible improvements and expansion in areas on the operating wing and first, ground and basement floors of the east wing of the hospital. Each of these areas has expanded its work load to take care of increased numbers of patients but the employees, meanwhile, are working in crowded space, waiting areas are Clown To Visit Emmett Kelly, Jr., is to pay a return visit to Moses Cone Hospital April 8 from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. Last Fall an announcement of his scheduled visit was made Unforeseen circumstances caused a cancellation, much to the regret of many who enjoyed him before. In mid-March, the representative of his sponsoring firm called to make a new date. Early studies showed that removal of the present laundry from the main building would offer the best key to expansion of many other departments housed in that same section. Recently the Trustees authorized J. N. Pease Associates, Architects- Engineers, in Charlotte to obtain firm cost estimates for a completely new laundry area. Projected plans call for the department to be located in a separate building near the steam plant and be connected with the main building by tunnel. The preliminary estimated cost is $375,- 000. Studies of a second part of a renovation and expansion plan were authorized in late February. Again the architect was instructed only to draw up working plans and firm cost estimates. The second part of the plan, after removing the Laundry, involves these departments: Operating rooms, Emergency rooms, X-Ray department, Physical Therapy, Admitting office, Accounting, Pharmacy and Central Supply, Storeroom, Personnel and Medical Records. The consultant's estimate for the work on these departments is $2,678,427. A great deal of study, both of the plans and of securing funds needed for financing such a program, is still to be done. No contracts have been let to date. But the Trustees are aware that with the constant growth, both in the number of hospital patients and in the area's population, expansion is necessary. Their aim is to achieve expansion in such a way that present and projected needs will be taken care of for a number of years ahead.
