Bockus, renowned gastroen- terologist, as speaker. The lecture will be at 8:00 p.m. and is open to the public. Area physicians are particularly encouraged to attend. Dr. Bockus is well known as an author, teacher, and researcher. In 1958, the alumni, former students, residents and fellows in gastroenterology of the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania founded the Bockus International Gastroenterology Society to perpetuate his teachings. The membership now totals over 300 members in 33 countries. As a University of Pennsylvania faculty member, he organized the clinic and department of gastroenterology. He also was.active in organizing the Subspecialty Board of Gastroenterology. Dr. Bockus holds an honorary fellowship in the Royal School of Medicine, London, and is an honorary consultant to the surgeon general of the U. S. Navy. Hospital Helps In U.F. Drive The United Fund Drive to raise $1,240,545 for 35 different agencies in the Greensboro area was kicked off in the hospital on September 25. At press time, the results had not been tallied but the drive was to be completed on October 6. All department heads were shown the 1968 campaign film, "Happenings" in an effort to increase their understanding of the drive. Mr. Jim Melvin, Campaign Chairman, spoke to personnel encouraging their support. The Drive was conducted in the Hospital by Mr. Frank Johnson, Personnel Director. Co-ordinator Polly Tillman, R.N., instructs students (I. to r.) David Moore, Elsie Chester and Jean Capps. Mrs. Chester and Mrs. Capps held scholarships from the Women's Auxiliary. 22 Practical Nurses Graduated Twenty two students graduated from Guilford Technical Institute's School for Licensed Practical Nurses on August 31. A reception with refreshments provided by the Hospital was held following the graduation ceremonies. This class is the first to graduate since Mrs. Polly Tillman, R.N., became co-ordinator of the program. Mrs. Tillman, a Duke University graduate, replaced Mrs. Dare Filipski whose husband was transferred to Raleigh. Other instructors are Mrs. Helen Black and Mrs. Clara Williams. The class was also unusual in that the first male student accepted in the program was among the graduates. The 22 graduates are: Mrs. Patricia Cain, Mrs. Jean Capps, Mrs. Elsie Chester, Mrs. Lynda Dabbs, Mrs. Shirley Eaddy, Mrs. Alice Emory, Miss Joan Graves, Mrs. Ruby Groce, Miss Mary Jessie, Mrs. Frances Jones, Mrs. Esther Lamb, Miss Charlotte Mc- Ginty, Mr. David Moore, Mrs. Frances Murray, Mrs. Maxine Oliver, Mrs. Jean Phillips, Mrs. Dorothy Robbins, Mrs. Dorothy Routh, Mrs. Cletus Stevenson, Miss Rebecca Thornburn, Mrs. Dorothy Valentine, and Miss Margie Whisnant. For the graduates there are many opportunities. Many of them are planning to work in area Hospitals. Mrs. Elsie Chester and Mrs. Cletus Stevenson will remain here. Two are going on for further training to earn R.N. degrees and others will work as private duty nurses. It is interesting to note that of the graduates, five were former employees of the hospital who desired to further their education and training by entering the program. Mrs. Cain and Miss Graves had worked as aides, Mr. Moore, as an orderly, Mrs. Murray as a Division Clerk and Mrs. Stevenson, as a maid in Housekeeping. The program at G.T.I, is a one year course. The first three months of training are spent in the classroom and during the latter nine months, three days a week are spent here in clinical training. To be eligible for admission to the program, a person must be between 18 and 50 years of age, preferably a high school graduate, in good physical and mental health, and with a satisfactory grade on pre-entrance examinations. AH graduates are eligible to take the state licensing exam given by the N. C. Board of Nursing in Raleigh. Information about the course can be obtained by calling G.T.I., 292-5780.
