Dedication Notes Nov. 13, 1991 for GMHL Believe me, I don't run the Medical Historical Library. It runs me! I would like to tell you the same thing that Anthony told Cleopatra...I really didn't come here to talk! But I must say something. There are so many people to thank for these rooms. -Ed and Mary Morris...without whom this would have been delayed for a long long time. This city is so fortunate to have these two as friends. -Dennis Barry and Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital for providing matching funds when they heard of the offer from Mary and Ed.. Dennis has always been very positive with this program. Great support from both. -Norm Garrett. The consummate programmer. He has always had the unique sense of timing...told me to whom I should present the concept, when, where how etc. -Wesley Long hospital for there cooperation to the Greensboro MHL -Greater Greensboro Society of Medicine...a gift of over #6,000 for these display cases...from the membership -Greater Greensboro Society of Medicine Auxiliary -Greensboro Medical Society -Over 250 individuals contributed to this venture... they also supported the thought that we are trying to capture yesterday and today for tomorrow. -Leslie Mackler, Julie Myrick, Miriam Harris, Sharon Wyrick...who head- up our enlarging library and have given so much help to this work. -Advisory Board In forming this historical library, all of us are just saying thanks to the people that have gone on before us...for the work and frustration and dedication they have demonstrated. It serves as a reminder to us now and those who will follow that the big-bang theory didn't operate here...it took decades and an unbelievable amount of work to give this high quality of medicine to the Piedmont that we are experiencing now. Often it was the Chinese water-torture treatment...drop by drop but we got there thanks to so many. We have so much talent in this Piedmont. This is just a start. All of my book collection is not here yet but it will be in time. In slowly transferring these books it sort of is like losing part of an extended family. But I also know it is the right thing to do. A plaque listing all contributors will be in place next year. It all takes time. I DO FEEL THAT HISTORY IS DOCUMENTED FROM THE WRITTEN WORD. VERBAL RECOLLECTIONS SOMETIMES ARE VALID BUT DON'T HANG YOUR HAT ON THEM!! In our twice a year History of Medicine Lectures-a series that started in 1984-history is being recorded and this will hopefully be a continuing and dynamic endeavor. Two volumes are now finished...fourteen lectures and they may be purchased thru the Library at this time...while they last. More are coming in future. To you ..the contributors and supporters, I say...thank you very much. Let's go a few rooms down and hear Dave Claytor's presentation on "The History of Pharmacy in Greensboro." Robert L. Phillips, M.D.
