Moses H Cone Memorial Hospital
Library Committee
May 9, 1996
Present: Dr. Don Smith, Dr. Stewart Rogers, Dr. G Plovsky, Dr. S
Farrell, Dr. Bert Fields, Karen Zeliff, Leslie Mackler
The expressed need for better access to library based information
is a clear finding of the two recent surveys of library
customers. Physicians, nurses and administrators want to get
current medical literature, practice guidelines and evidence
based information at their point of need, desktop and home
terminals. The committee discussed the increasing importance of
knowledge-based information for clinical practice, to fulfill
managed care requirements, quality assurance, educational
initiatives and productivity issues for nurses on the units. The
consensus of the committee is to recommend that access to
knowledge-based information be a part of the corporate
information structure.
Action: Don Smith will address this issue during the Education
Committee meeting. Feedback will be sought from each of the
hospital's medical and surgical services. Greensboro AHEC is
beginning a strategic planning process and will consider access
to database information in the context of standards set by the
American Academy of Family Practice and other residency
accrediting organizations.
The Library's capital requests for FY97 will include new CD ROM
drives. All 12 drives on the network are in use. This year the
number of discs for Medline increased. Two multiple use
subscriptions cannot be loaded on the network because there are
no free CD ROM drives.
