MOSES CONE HOSPITAL REVIEW Vol. I No GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA September, 1966 United Fund Drive Underway "The announced goal of $1,163,- 102 for our 1967 United Fund Campaign represents a significant challenge to the citizens of the entire area of Guilford County served by the 35 member agencies of the United Fund. "The goal is based on a careful study of the minimum needs of these 35 member agencies for 1967 operation and have been thoroughly reviewed by a broadly representative Budget Committee composed of some 23 business and civic leaders. The work of this budget committee is your best assurance that the dollars asked for are needed and will be spent for the purposes requested. "While the increase in dollars being sought is substantial, we must emphasize the campaign this year includes additional agencies. The Legal Aid Foundation and the Salvation Army and its Boys Club alone will require some $94,000. But, we remind you there will be two less independent campaigns — two less appeals to you — the citizens of our communities for support. Thus, your United Fund continues to fulfill one of its basic purposes — that of reducing multiplicity of campaigns and providing you the contributor with the opportunity for one-time giving. With your one fair share pledge you can fulfill your responsibility for support of a total program of basic voluntary community services. In addition to new agencies, there are the increasing demands on the member agencies for program and services to a rapidly growing and expanding area. We must at least try to keep up as best we can with this growth and these increasing needs. "The 1967 United Fund Campaign presents us with an opportunity to demonstrate our faith in ourselves. The last two years, we have done this in convincing fashion and I am sure that all our citizens both corporate and individual will provide proof again that they do care — they are proud (Continued on Page 8) Dr. Curtis P. Artz Speaker Chosen for Herman Cone Lecture Dr. Curtis P. Artz, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of South Carolina, will speak on "Current Concepts in the Treatment of Shock" at the annual Herman Cone Lecture. The lecture, to be held on October 27, will be at 8:00 p.m. at the Greensboro Public Library Auditorium. DR. CURTIS P. ARTZ Dr. Artz is considered an expert in the field of burns and the treatment of shock. He believes that the burn patient is "ideal" for study by a surgeon because, "A burn is the most severe form of injury to which man is liable and presents the surgeon with a wide range of day-to-day complications and physiological changes. Experiences with burn patients can be utilized in all general surgery patients." Dr. Artz has a wide range of interests. He has written over 150 articles for scientific and medical journals, contributed some sixteen chapters to books, and authored four of his own books. Perhaps, his most widely known volumns are The Treatment of Burns, published in 1957 and Surgical Complications. Dr. Artz received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Ohio State University and his M.S. degree from Baylor University. He served a rotating internship in the Baltimore City Hospitals and a three year surgical residency at Ohio State University Hospital. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1948 until a heart attack forced his retirement in 1956. While at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, he developed the famous U. S. Army Surgical Research Unit and also directed a team in Korea which studied the basic physiology of burns. Dr. Artz is deeply interested in medical education and was Professor of Surgery at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical Branch. In 1965, he assumed his present position as Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department at the Medical College of S. C. His professional honors are numerous, and he is a member of some 22 professional organizations. He is currently serving as President of the Southeastern Surgical Conference and is a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Artz will be the third speaker for the Herman Cone Lecture Series. The Lecture is sponsored jointly by the Board of Trustees and the Education and Program Committee of the Medical and Dental Staff of which Dr. Rufus Hambright is chairman. The lecture was instituted in memory of Mr. Herman Cone who was Vice- President of the Moses Cone Hospital Board of Trustees from 1918-1947 and President from 1947 until 1953. He died in 1955. The first lecturer was Dr. Dwight E. Harken of Harvard Medical School who spoke in 1964. Last year, the speaker was Dr. Louis Weinstein, Professor of Medicine at Tufts Medical School.
