Old North State News 1887 1993 Presidential Notes Recently, the Old North State Medical Society office has been at the forefront in responding to inquiries, planning for the upcoming annual meeting and involving our members in the health-care planning process in this state. The ONSMS Legislative Committee has made health care-reform one of the primary agenda items of the year. James 0. Jones, M.D.. executive director of the North Carolina Health Planning Commission, has extended to ONSMS an invitation to work with the Commission in designing a health care plan for North Carolina. Names were submitted to Dr. Jones for consideration for appointment to each of thirteen (13) different advisory committees. Our thanks to J. P. Green, M.D. and Ed Treadwell, M.D. for their efforts in this area. The ONSMS was recently furnished a document "North Carolina AIDS Advisory Council Community Survey on State HIV Testing Policy," ONSMS component society presidents were sent this survey and asked to become members of the HIV Prevention Community Planning entity in their areas. Many thanks to the Legislative Committee chaired by Jonathan Weston, M.D. for their efforts in having the Jeralds- Ezzell-Fletcher Health Care Reform Act of 1993 ratified by the North Carolina General Assembly. The final version has been sent to executive committee members and shared with the local medical The annual Zollicoffer Lecture was presented this year by Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith. The lecture was postponed from 2/11/94 till 4/15/94 due to inclement weather. As usual this was a first class event It deserves the participation by all ONSMS members in the future. We are moving, irreversibly toward a managed care environment. Therefore, in this year's CME program, we are going to study, question, and discuss how to survive in and with the managed care This important addition to the CME share billing with topics on :.Mon, AIDS, pain control and advances in radiology. On the social front, we will again have an OBIKA celebration on Friday evening, July 1. The West African term which means "The Family is Supreme" is the most fitting theme ever for the convention family social. OBIKA II will feature live entertainment and a full course meal to enhance the family fellowship. An added event this year is a Friday night reception, held after the family social, for physicians/dentists and then- spouses to meet with the exhibitors. This is an opportunity for the exhibitors and sponsors to meet and talk with Old North State members one-on-one. The reception is free to ONSMS/ONSDS members and spouses and representatives of companies who are convention sponsors. Others may attend the reception for a fee of S125. If you haven't attended either of these events, don't continue to mistreat yourselves by missing such exciting and enlightening events. To all members of ONSMS, I re- emphasize Dr. McKinnon's appeal that you become financial members of ONSMS in 1994. To those of you who are not members, I ask that you join our efforts to insure the equitable provision of health care, and equal opportunity for all medical professionals in our state.
